Part of the issue with the early episodes of Miami Vice is the tone wasn't quite there yet, and that's very common in TV. The show's writers and producers hadn't quite gotten the mixture of humor and drama down yet, so they try stuff and see what works and what doesn't. So Elvis, Crockett's alligator, is around for the first few episodes and when the producers realize it doesn't quite work, he's gone. So is the endings with Crockett and Tubbs reflecting on the boat and having steaks and whatever in favor of the very nihilistic endings Miami Vice became known for. Izzy stays, but Noogie Lamont goes.
