WhatsApp to be led by Indian start-up founder as Will Cathcart steps back Archive | Article

Liv McMahon- June 22

WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart has announced that he is leaving his role.

Cathcart has overseen Meta's popular messaging platform for nearly seven years - and scaled its private chat functions to more than three billion users worldwide.

He said in posts on social media on Monday that while the platform was in "the strongest position it's ever been" it also "felt like the right moment to step back".

Cathcart will continue to play a role within Meta's leadership ranks, with Kunal Shah, founder of Indian fintech start-up Cred, taking over as head of WhatsApp.

Facebook founder and Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Shah had created "one of India's most important technology companies" with Cred.

He added that the fintech founder "brings the kind of builder mentality and global perspective that will serve him well in running the world's biggest messaging app".

"I look forward to working with Kunal to continue to make WhatsApp the best service for billions of people and millions of businesses," Zuckerberg said.

Cred, based in Bengaluru, has sought to disrupt the payments sector in India with a "members-only" service that rewards high-earners for timely credit card payments.

Prior to founding Cred in 2018, Shah was an investor and advisor to a handful of different start-ups across India and south east Asia, according to his LinkedIn page.

He wrote on the platform on Monday that he would continue as a shareholder in the firm in taking on the new role at WhatsApp - adding that Cred had raised $900m (£679m) in investment from Meta.

According to Bloomberg, this would give the Meta a 20% stake in the company.

Shah noted that while Meta would join as a minority investor in Cred, it would have "no access to member data".

Meta's shake-up of WhatsApp's leadership comes as it looks to strengthen the app's already booming presence in India.

Falling under Meta's "family of apps" - its set of social networks including Facebook, Instagram and Messenger that boast billions of users - WhatsApp has been an area where the firm has tried to boost revenue with ads, paid subscriptions and AI tools.

The app is widely used in India, with about 853 million users, according to World Population Review.
But it has also faced some recent scrutiny in the country over its privacy and data sharing practices with its parent company, Meta.

"Ahh yes good saar, you may buy a stake in our company if we get to lead yours. So please give us money and redeem our leaders"

Have people not learnt anything from China, and how it was a bad idea to give others so much influence over basic services, especially when they hate our guts?

Why hire a middle-aged indian venture capital weirdo to run a mature product division inside facebook? Why have him walk away from running the supposed high-flying Indian finance company he created?

Saar our app is very secure please do the needful and send bobs and vagene through our servers.

Yet another one ORGANICALLY making their way to senior leadership, nothing to see here Banchod, they're the best candidates for the job. Now just do one thing madam, go to the Target and get me the CEO card.
WhatsApp is commonly used for scams, I believe. Great.

WhatsApp to be led by Indian
For those unaware, to increase their izzat, hundreds of millions of Indians get up every day and use WhatsApp to spam "Good morning, beautiful!" and retarded glittery gifs and videos nobody watches to every group chat and contact in their phone. Like in the 90s when people discovered email and added everyone they knew to those FW: RE: Re: FWD: Joke of the Day chains.

The billions of messages and shitty waterfall/sunrise/rainbow graphics fill up their cheap phones to the point Google created teams dedicated to deleting duplicate files, and the daily bandwidth spike trashes everyone's connections throughout India.

I'm sure the new WhatsApp head will pursue innovations like easier searches and higher resolution/framerate support, to let a billion of his tribe spam 4k Ultra HD slop to each other as their infrastructure falls apart.

Whats lunacy to me is of course this just means more h1b and offshoring to the coethnics. Do none of these white techbros have americans to pick as successors? Thats the part i dont get is why we willingly hand over our destruction.

Pull the spiteful dick move, apply to every last one on the Indian job application site so they can't hire H-1Bs. They'll almost certainly let you punch in your US address because HR holes are lazy and retarded and don't know how to disable that in software.
