I see it quite often with depression, telling people it's okay if you leave dishes unwashed or don't take the trash out or don't brush your teeth, all things that are incredibly unhealthy and unsanitary for those with depression to get into the habit of doing. It's really not okay.

Tumblr literally wants to kill everyone.

What I dislike most about tumblr mental illness is how they actively encourage people to stay sick.

Tumblr has taken self care which was the concept of 'it's okay to have a bad day where your mental illness is too much to fight and to just do what you need to in order to get through that day as long as you don't hurt yourself or anyone else and it's okay to step back from situations that make your illness worse and take responsibility for keeping yourself grounded and as healthy as possible" and turned it into the dangerous extreme of "it's okay if you don't do shit to get well or challenge yourself to deal with your mental illness EVER because that's how you survive so feel free to languish in a non-functioning state and if anyone questions that, they're a shitlord. Also use your illness as a 'get out of jail free' card, who needs responsibilities or reality?"

Yes, encourage someone who is paranoid to live in fear and give into their delusions. Tell them to stay inside so they can never make a living and shut themselves out to the point where they'll never be able to.

Shit like this infuriates me so much. Mental illness is something you ultimately have to struggle with for the rest of your life if you have it, and you have to fight harder in order to function at a level that society wants. There will be times when the disease gets the better of you, but you can't fall into habits that reafirm whatever you're going through. That's the first thing they try to teach you when you get help, for god's sake.

Then again, tumblr also does their 'cute self-care!! uwu how dare you mention having mental illness can be a struggle, just have tea and blankets and a safe space for your ills!!' shit too, and that just makes me want to fucking throw things.

There is a grain of truth in that post: telling a delusional person that their delusions are false will reinforce a persecution delusion. What you need to do is take no position on it and get them to think on their own about it

Partially true, but often left to their own devices they won't do anything about it, from a few people I've known with various mental health issues. It's a sort of lose-lose situation between trying to help and leaving them to it

The point is to ask them about their delusions in a non confrontational manner and eventually when they try to explain it they will realize that their delusions are ridiculous

Tumblr also really likes to promote the kind of self care that really won't do shit for anyone. "Feeling depressed? Read a book! Pet a kitten!! Stay in bed with chocolate!! uwuuwuwuw" and things like that, which are nice ways to relax and I'm sure do help some people when they're stressed out but when you're seriously depressed staying in bed all day and petting kittens isn't the kind of self care you need. When you're depressed or anxious you need to do things like take a shower, make sure you've taken your medicine, do the dishes, make sure you have food for yourself, talk to a doctor, and, oh wow, wait, those are all things tumblr likes to actively denounce! what a coincidence.

ah yes, 'cute self-care', the fucking bane of my existence. The people that parrot that the loudest also cry about mentally ill people daring to say that mental illness is a fucking disease and a struggle, because apparently we should only focus on nice comfy things all the time and not actually do the shit that legit helps. While relaxing really DOES help at times, other times you need to fucking force yourself out of your bed and do shit you don't want to.

Then again, tumblr seems to think mental illness is something that should be envied and is a goddamn gift, instead of the impairment it actually is. They wear it like it's badges of PRIDE that they 'have' these illnesses and aren't really getting help for it, when actual sufferers normally just want to be like everyone else in society and work their asses off to manage their shit, and would probably happily get rid of them if there were ever a chance to.

This, exactly! Taking a mental health day is one thing but you can't just let yourself slack completely. It's so unhealthy in so many ways (not gonna powerlevel, just gonna say I know a thing or two about this lol).

But Tumblrinas don't want to acknowledge that. They just want the pity points.

It kills me how many people want to have autism. Just astounding. Basically only because they want to be lazy, socially.

With all of it, really, it's fucked up because they already work less hard than people actually with these issues (I mean the people with mental issues have to work harder to function day-to-day, generally), but they want appropriate those people's problems in order to work even less hard at life.

An older highly functional autistic I used to work with found it confusing that these kids wanted his diagnosis so badly. Sure he'd have been happy to have actually gifted it to them and lived a normal life.

On that topic - can you imagine the real shitstorm if these self dxers actually got the diagnosis they think is so cool? Nothing's 'cooler' than a person so controlled by their mental illness that taking a shower and getting dressed are exhausting challenges and based on the fact these kids think NPD, BPD, PTSD, DID, and others can all co-habitate together...

Shit, they'd be lucky if they could function enough to eat.

Mental illness isn't really something to be proud of, I mean 46% of the population will suffer from with some kind of mental illness some time in their lives, it doesn't really make you unique..

There's a reason why diagnoses are best left to doctors, is because they're neutral observers. Anyone can find some sort of symptoms of most mental disorders if they look hard enough, but what matters is if they're abnormal compared to the normal population. Someone may have anxiety in some situations, such as driving during Winter weather, but doesn't mean you have an anxiety disorder.

Also, in terms of diagnoses, standardized tests and questionaires are required for most mental diagnoses.

This is why sites like WebMD etc are actually doing wayyyy more harm than good.
-->Tumblrina scrolling through illnesses
-->Sees something
"Oh, those symptoms sound like me! I must have XYZ"
-->Tells everyone how she's "diagnosed with XYZ"

Also, don't forget that symptoms of a mental illness such as depression, may also be due to biological causes, such as a hormone imbalance or mild TBI, and the layman may not be able to tell the difference.

And/or some of the substances they may be abusing, as well, can cause similar symptoms to some issues.

More important is knowing how to weigh or adjust standard tests and do differential diagnosis, factoring in the fact that your patients aren't always going to be telling the truth or, with many disorders, even be in any shape to report symptoms accurately.

I don't mind short-term diversions from the main subject of the topic, so I'll leave the posts up, but there's a lot of powerleveling and off-topic discussion here. Please focus on the actual topic so I don't need to either lock it or mock it.

Maybe this thread should be moved to the off-topic boards? It seems to be less about tumblrites and more about self-diagnosing in general at this point.

Aw, I came back here to post this only to find the thread dying.

Well, I'll let the existence of this burn into your brain.

Edit: I was fixing it, man you all are fast.
