I wanted to post a thread where those that served can share stories of those lost. To keep their memories alive, I dont think it should be limited to how they passed but how they lived.
Reminder to keep details somewhat vague to prevent doxing.
Now I don't remember many details but my great-grandfather managed to avoid going to the frontlines because he had a personal letter from the royal family.
He then showed the letter to his superiors and they assigned him to do paperwork in the base, safely, away from the warzone.
I had a million ancestors who were Union conscripts and one who was a Confederate volunteer. Not aware of any of them dying. I feel bad for the conscripts.
My grandfather (Dad's dad) was in the Army during WW2, but I didn't know details until recently. He was in the relief force sent to the Philippines when Japan invaded, and they were halfway to the islands when Manila & Corregidor fell. So the transports headed to Australia & he spent most of the war there, hanging telephone wire through the Outback (he was in signals as a lineman).
My stepfather's dad was in Patton's 3rd & got himself a Luger, along with a lot of pictures which are in a scrapbook.
