It's kind of like the once-popular .25 ACP, the favorite of pimps and related street scum for years (until they discovered that 9mm often does the job, and .22 LR is cheaper). Interesting thing about it is that while it has next to no stopping power -- shoot somebody with one and he's likely as not to get really pissed and beat you to death -- it has very high lethality. That's because people shot with one often don't take it seriously. They don't get treatment or anything. Not a good idea. Jeff Cooper told of a guy in a bad mood at a party who, stumbling across a .25 auto upstairs, stuck it to his head and pulled the trigger. Not thinking that he had been much injured, he put a bandaid over the wound and went downstairs and rejoined the party. Next day, though, he woke up dead.

Yup, a 9-shot Harrington & Richardson break-top revolver. Not a bad gun, actually. The rest that you had to say about .22s is the fevered fantasy of screenwriters that has gotten picked up popularly but isn't true. And yeah, James Brady was vegetized by the shot (which is why it isn't the favorite of assassins -- it didn't kill him with a head shot), and his wife Sarah became a strident anti-gunner thereafter.

(I should note that the OSS did fiddle with a High Standard .22 during the war, not because it is especially effective for assassinations, but because it could be effectively silenced.)

.25 actually less deadly than .22LR. Here's why:

Yeah, as far as I know the main value is that you can get an insanely quiet pistol with the right ammo and a suppressor. The bouncing bullet thing is mostly Fudd lore, sorry to say @Rafal Gan Ganowicz. Weird internal bounces are theoretically possible I believe, but shot for shot there's a reason 9mm has become the standard.

We laughed about it at the time -- the "Devastator" bullets, which didn't devastate, were marked down at gun shops across this great land of ours because they were a gimmick. If you look around, you'll find all kinds of amazing magical bullets that are on the market for a little while and then disappear. The only actual "exploding" bullets that ever much worked were .50 BMG rounds and some sniper rounds that worked some of the time. The media went all berserk over the "Devastators" because a name like that draws morons like shit draws flies. There isn't enough room in a .22 slug for enough explosive to do anything useful. But yes, the press and simps since have gone all crazy about exploding bullets, Reagan, Brady's head exploded, yadyadayada. Want to cause trouble with an "exploding" bullet, get Glaser Safety Slugs for your .45 and call it a day.

Yeah, you'll find lots of stupid gimmick bullets out there over the years with little corkscrews and knives and shit inside them, all with the promise that they'll totes tear up the insides of whoever you shoot. And lawyers are busy holding up standard hollow-point bullets as "cop killer death bullets" if you shoot someone with one. What a bullet actually does when it hits someone is 100% luck. You might see a FMJ tumble in loop-de-loops around in someone, you might see a hollow-point zip straight through them without expanding one bit. Fancy bullets are no substitute for aim. The reason I have hollow-points is a hope that they'll be less likely to penetrate my target or a wall and harm someone on the other side, not a thought that they'll make a bad shot into a kill.

That was specifically Black Talons that the media and anti gun lawyers, etc were holding that up as. Winchester made them up until 2000 and then rebranded them to something else so the original BTs and their boxes can be something of a curio / collectors item today.

There was also the huge media circus around 5.7mm back in the day, which is an honestly useless round if not being used for it's single specific application.

Oh god I remember a Law & Order SVU episode where a pawn/gun shop has a box of Black Talon and I think it was that fine cougar Mariska who says "Oh those are illegal..." which isn't true at all. If I'm not mistaken, Ranger SXT is basically Black Talon but isn't black (like a negro who won't vote for Biden) and the joke is that SXT stands for Same eXact Thing.

A buddy of mine from my hometown took me out shooting after I got back from my first cruise/deployment. He was showing me his rocksalt shells for his 12g and loaded a few up. Someone he knew from work came up and started handling the weapon, didn't check to see if it was loaded, aimed at the 50ft target I was setting up, pulled the trigger, and I caught a bunch of salt in my chest and shoulder. Luckily it wasn't an actual shell, really.

My buddy buttstroked the dude though and I ended up kicking him in the balls later that night at the bar

Anyone know why my Mosin bolt is sticking sometimes? It seems to not be chambering the round properly, and I can only close it halfway before it's stuck. If I move the bolt forward slowly, it seems to do a much better job of chambering and not getting stuck. It doesn't happen all the time, but it is annoying.

Pull bolt, run some engine degreaser on the bits, lube, reassemble, run a brush in the chamber, run a brush through the bolt rails, do some cleaning (degrease, regrease the relevant bits), then try again. Cause it sounds like you have some dirt/cosmoline/other shit there.

Or you have a chamber burr - but that you'll be able to tell if the case on extraction is coming out with a scratch or gouge. If that is the case, you can track it down + hit it wit ha file.

Check your extractor. It needs to be flat with the bolt. If it looks anything like this, get a new one. While you're waiting for it to ship, try to hammer out the old one and very carefuly bend it back. If you don't break it, you'll have a spare extractor.

There are other reasons too, all extractor-related. If there's a divot in the top part of it, can try to polish it a bit so it catches less. Check it for burrs, etc.

I'll look into it, thanks. I don't think it's the headspace because the serial number on the bolt and the serial number on the barrel match up.
