I like these guys for super basic kydex holsters. I thought I was going to buy one and use it until I figured out which semi-custom holster I wanted and it's been good enough that I've just been using it every day(-ish) for going on three years now. Out of the box I had to tighten the retention screw a bit, it was a little sloppy and the pistol would fall out if I held it upside down, but it's maintained its tightness for consistent draw and holstering ever since, no more slop at all. I carry at 4-5 o'clock behind my hip, I pretty much just adjust it the first time I get in my truck for the day then forget I'm wearing it. I'm not sure how it does in appendix carry if that's what you're wanting to do
I like that the back of the holsters run the full length of the slide so you can pop it off with your thumb if you're just wearing sweatpants/basketball shorts and have it on your waistband rather than clipped to your belt, and that helps the comfort too, the pistol doesn't touch your skin at all

All .380 ACP self defense ammo has issues with meeting the FBI standards for penetration and expansion. That being said Hornady Critical Defense is probably your best bet in that category. You will still only be looking at 8-10 inches of penetration but at least they tend to open up reliably.
That being said because I know the gun so well, I carry 9x18 mak. I'm also retarded and when it's hot I carry a 1905 mgf 1903 that needs soft 32.
Aside that, I was gonna convert my mak to 380 but I just looked into it and as of current post you can get hotter 9x18. While not great and I don't own a super compact etc (my wife does) eve na 25 acp beats no gun.
It's late I'm tired, got my AR lower, since it's a beater. I'm super impressed with the "guardsman" I've yet to shoot it so not sure how I feel with that trigger. Either way as a man who owns OG LaRue PSA is based.
After watching several of Paul Harrell's videos testing different .380 loads (Rest in Power, King) I was convinced hot ball ammo is a solid choice for short-barreled .380 pocket guns. I keep some spicy old S&B ball around for that purpose. Most hollows just won't satisfyingly expand, so I would rather focus on maximum penetration thru soft material (jackets, light obstacles).
Kiwis from east of the Mississippi, what do you do to find a good shooting range? I'm very used to having plentiful public land to go shoot on, but I'm lost on what to do in states with very little public land.
@Romulus augustulus pretty much laid it out, but he's pretty lucky. Much of the eastern US seems to be pretty much restricted to shooting at a range, most of which suck.

Any shooting that isn't ordinary target shooting or clays is pretty much a western US thing. Being from Florida, I always find the characterization of the state as "the gunshine state" laughable. Despite very light gun control unless you live out in the sticks you're rarely going to to do anything more than ordinary paper target shooting at an indoor or, if you want to take a long drive early in the morning, turbofudd outdoor range. There are a few scattered places where you play GI Joe on public land or in tactical bays but they're far from where most people live and often crowded. I look back on my time there and it's hard to believe I stayed interested in guns with how inconvenient it was to do anything more than do slow fire at targets. That place sucks swamp ass in all ways aside from the lack of gun control laws and zero income tax.

I'm very lucky to have an indoor range thats busy enough to stay in business, and as long as you're not hitting the ceiling or other lane's areas they're cool with rapid fire.
the springer is a good rifle. with the right load you can take it out to 1,000 yards and keep your group within the size of a man. A good sharps or winchester 1885 can shrink that group considerably.

The ~20 years of breech loading black powder rifles before the advent of smokeless poweder in the late 1880s is absolutely fascinating.
You had single shot bolt action, multi shot bolt action (Italian and Swiss), rolling block, falling block, trapdoor, side hinged, rotating block and magazine fed lever action.
Both Remington and Winchester sold magazine fed bolt action .45-70 rifles. Sales weren't strong because by then US sportsmen had fully bought in to the lever action. It wasn't until post-WW1 that returning veterans familiar with Bolt guns started to buy more bolt guns.
here are the Remington and Winchester rifles. remarkable to me are the stocks. Very little has changed stylistically with wooden stocks here in the US. the little fleur-de-lis checkering border seen on the Remington can still be found on higher end US shotguns and rifles to this day, Like the Winchester feather weight.
The S.L. Variant speed loader I ordered arrived today and I am very happy with it. Unlike most speed loaders where you twist a knob on the rear of the loader to release the cartridges and they slide into the chambers under gravity, with the S.L. Variant the cartridges are all sitting on top of springs and a latch holds them in place. When you insert the cartridges/speed loader into the cylinder there is a release plunger located at the center of the loader inside the ring of cartridges. A firm press of this plunger against the rear of the cylinder releases all the cartridges and the springs they are all sitting on "squirts" them into their respective chambers with authority, even when the revolver is held horizontally. I've been trying mine out all day and it has worked every time. I'm quite impressed by it. The body of the loader is polymer that seems to be high quality and is lightweight. A benefit of the design is the springs hold the cartridges fairly firmly in place, so they don't wiggle around inside the loader like normal twist-style speed loaders like the 5 Star speed loaders. The build quality feels very high. I will absolutely be buying at least two more. I just started out with one to test out to see if it functions as well as the originals, and it definitely seems that they do. The knob on the back is threaded for an extended grip to screw on that is available separately, and I think I will be grabbing one for each of the loaders I buy just to make manipulating them a bit easier, and so the rear of the extended grip can be pressed with the palm of my hand when reloading to ensure positive release of the cartridges. The company also has a couple of pouches/holders for them. One is a more traditional double leather pouch that I believe is lined with polymer, but the other one is a more modern polymer "tactical" style that can clip to belts or MOLLE/PALS webbing and has a fully adjustable retention. Both styles work with or without the optional extended handle/grip/knob or whatever you want to call it threaded on to the loader. These have absolutely surpassed the 5 Star speed loaders as my favorite, so long as they continue to hold up and remain reliable.
I wish they made them for .41 Magnum for my Model 57. They make them for six shot .357 Mag S&W N Frames like the Model 27 and 28, and for .44 Magnum and .45 Colt N Frames like the Model 29 and 629, but not for .41 Magnum sadly. The .41 Mag loaders from 5 Star aren't very smooth to use, and their chunky design makes me worry about it scratching the hell out of my vintage wheelgun. If it were a later model and a carry gun then it wouldn't bother me, but it's an early first generation Model 57 from 1968 and it's in particularly clean condition. I want to keep it that way.
They make other models that fit a wide variety of revolvers. They have 5 shot .38/.357 models, various 6 shot models including ones that will fit N Frame .357s like the Model 27, and even models for the 7 shot S&W 686. If you're into wheelguns and are wanting to pick up a quality, easy to use speed loader, try the S.L Variant. They're about $35 for the loaders, but they ship from Tokyo so you do have to pay shipping, tariffs, and stuff like that, so it comes out to about $50 per loader. I fully feel they're worth it and I am glad someone decided to make this design available again, and has made an effort to maintain the high standard of quality that the originals were known for.
fun fact: Colt tried to chamber the .41 mag in the python. it was going to have a 5 shot cylinder. unfortunately the lockwork of the gen 1 python couldn't take it, and I don't think even a prototype was made.
The Gen 2 could take it, but it's a dead cartridge. We're more likely to get a 5 shot .44 special, but even that is very unlikely i feel.

I didn't notice before because he nearly always has shades or protective eyegear on. At first glance he looks like a megawigger with both eyebrows shaved, but they're actually fading in color towards the sides. I don't remember ever seeing something like that before.
