A bondservant is someone who sells themselves into effective slavery for a period of time. You in essence trade your human rights in exchange for a cash payment at the end - your obedience is ensured by that payment. This sounds crazy to us, but in Jewish culture being a slave of this sort was a social contract that could not easily be broken; masters were expected to take care of their slaves for life and take care of (or at least provide the slave the means to take care of ) their families at least until their children were old enough to take care of their mother and siblings. Unlike Roman or Greek slaves, in Hebrew culture slaves had significant rights - their masters did not hold. the power of life and death over them unless they committed a crime against their master such as theft at which point the Master would have the right to pass and carry out judgement. But if you were a slave and beaten unjustly by your master, you could take them to court for legal redress including payment.
Think about it this way: If you were a bellhop in a 50-story fancy luxury hotel in India. The hotel would be legally obgliated, for the term of your employment, to provide you with a room, food, and medical care for yourself, your wife, and your children as well as clothing, etc. In the meantime when off shift you had access to the pool, the gym, the wifi, and the kitchen would give you the special of the day.
And outside is the slums of Mumbai, which is where you'd be if you didn't have your job, full of people literally starving to death in the street.
But, if you sign a deal with the Hotel owner where you aren't allowed to quit, ever, but in exchange you are allowed to keep your position for life: being they won't kick you out of your apartment in the hotel and will feed you until you kick. With the alternative being to trying to survive as an old man in India.
Suddenly this deal doesn't sound like such a bad trade off.
