Wanted to share some obscure-ish math rock/blackgaze bands that probably have listener counts in the single digits.

Eremo

These guys are a Milanese math rock/post rock band with a sound that I can only really describe as "extremely softcore tech-death with pirate attributes".

Couldn't really dig up much about them as they seem to be fairly unknown to the anglosphere internet. They're a four-man outfit who formed back in 2015. Their last recorded album was back in 2021. They still put out vinyls, which is pretty neat.

(NOTE: DO NOT BUY THEIR SHIRTS AS THERE IS NO GUARENTEE ANY OF THEIR MERCH IS STILL IN PRODUCTION)

Their last instagram post was made back in 2022, and their last facebook post was October of 2023, shilling another Italian band called Tielo.

They are likely a dead nigger band at this point, but their music is still pretty solid in my eyes.

Synextactic

Synextactic is an even less well-known "math metal" band from Romania, who, to my knowledge, have not released any new tracks since 2011.

They are a Bucuresți-based band with a single "album" consisting of exactly two tracks. I put album in quotes, as it's not quite certain whether or not this album was produced legally by an actual studio.

Most of what I could find on this band comes from obscure Romanian metal forums that I had to translate using Google, and even those threads are pretty scant. The band, itself, is a one-man project started by a guitarist named DinuB, whose last forum post was made back in 2014.

DinuB/Synextatic's last facebook post was made back in 2017. If anyone has any more information on this guy, do post it in the thread.

tf:ⱱs:ȷs

Tfvsjs is a Hong Kong-based math rock/post rock band that at least seems to be semi-active. They started out as a screamo/hardcore project, but later found their niche doing Cantonese math rock. They started off doing covers of other bands, and managed to release their debut album back in 2013. Their most recent album was made back in 2016, but they've still been fairly active in the music scene since then.

This band is a refresher compared to the previous two, as they haven't gone completely AWOL and disappeared into the gazey mist. Their music is pretty good; do check it out when you get the chance.

Neat, these guys sound great.

Pretend is a band from Thousand Oaks, California and have been around for 20 years. They’ve only released 2 albums and an EP. Their last release was in 2017, but they’re still active. Think their last tour was in 2020. Setting that aside, they all have independent side projects that are all ambient stuff. Nothing tops their first album though:

Can’t mention Pretend without bringing up Dilute, a San Francisco band from the 90’s-2000’s that’s way more shoegaze than anything. The lead singer, Marty Anderson, had severe Krohns Disease IIRC that basically handicapped his whole life. He went on to do some solo stuff, but the drummer for Dilute became a producer and ended up working on Pretends 1st Album. You can hear the through line:

Math Rock is a funny genre in that it tricks you into thinking the most complicated and interesting part is the guitar work, but in reality it’s all about drums. Every instrument really plays off of and with each other (like jazz but interesting), but when I think “riffs” in any math rock song I usually think of the drum lines.

To break with that, TSOSIS (The Speed of Sound in Seawater) is another California band from Sacramento made up of Damien Verret, Lucas Ulrici, Jordan Seavers, and Fernando Oliva. They released stuff from the late 2000’s to mid 2010’s, only dropping one album at their end. They managed to balance complicated stuff with indie twee in a way I really like:

They did an acoustics album that’s awesome after having listened to the originals, and shows off their more simple approach:

This song in particular is a fun little through line for the rest of the west coast scene, as in the original version has Corey Lockwood of A Lot Like Birds and Sufferer as the screamer. Good band if you’re into Post-Hardcore:

But TSOSIS ended and reformed later with just Damien and a new chick. Still have to get around to listening to them, but I didn’t care much for his solo work as So Much Light (under which he worked with Yvette Young at times):

This is better tbh:

But then you have Jordan and Luke (Fernando kind of does ambient stuff), and damn are they a hell of a combo. They did a lot of demo stuff that never became anything (still have to upload it again), but they did release an EP in 2016 under the name Moonbank:

There’s only 5 songs but it was a bitch to pick one to post. They’re all fantastic (except John Huff, and that’s only because I’m biased to the original live video they made when TSOSIS was recording their first album). Still, none of those touch any of their original demos imo.

Math rocks really got 4 areas: Midwest, English, Japanese, and West Coast. While I love Mouse on the Keys, Toe, Te, and that I used to be subscribed to Musical Mathematics (who still have all 9 of their compilations up on band camp, the best source for a shit load of good math rock bands obscure and known) way back when, West Coast Math is by far the most interesting and enjoyable area.

Última edición:
The minimalist video style matches the song somehow. Their whole "Literary Math" album is good.

Blackgaze and post-rock have nothing to do with math rock WTF OP
The crossbleed is pretty high. I've listened to a lot of songs that claim to be one of the aforementioned genres and end up either taking elements from all three or straight-up transitioning between all three. Dotzd made an entire career by doing this.

Not really obscure but I like more abrasive math rock that veers more into metal/hardcore territory, so naturally I would say my favorite in the genre is Botch.

Some good rec's in this thread. I'll throw in some blackgaze and shoegaze to balance things out for OP.

If you've looked into blackgaze beyond Sunbather, you've almost certainly come across "I Want To Be There" by Sadness (if you haven't, I think it's fair to say literally every album by Sadness post-2017 is peak blackgaze). He has a few somewhat obscure side projects that delve into black metal adjacent genres, but Trhä is his most notable. While the project leans more into raw black metal, one album stands out as something that's closer to Sadness, and easily one of his best albums if you can sit through the long runtime:

I came across this recently as well. It's nothing innovative, but if you like Japanese shoegaze, it's one of the best shoegaze releases this year:

And finally, this guy is genuinely obscure and deserves more attention. He's noisy shoegaze, and if that's your thing, it's definitely up there as one of the best shoegaze releases of 2023. He released an album this year as well, and while it's good, I think he experimented a little too hard.

Maybe I'm being autistic, but the translated titles of his songs are profoundly sad to me. The lyrics are basically him repeating the song title.

I want to reduce your anxiety even a little
I want to be one of your reasons for living
I want you to stay healthy forever
I don't want to hurt you any more
I want your dreams to come true
I want you to be a little happier with my songs
