They are messing up The Mandarin again. (Archive)

Shang-Chi producer Jonathan Schwartz recently detailed that viewers should not expect a comic book accurate Mandarin.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Schwartz discussed the upcoming Shang-Chi film as Marvel Studios debuted the film’s first trailer and poster.

Entertainment Weekly prefaced the discussion describing that the film’s main villain, Wenwu, played by Tony Leung, “is a new character, created entirely for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

EW describes him as Shang-Chi’s father and “a powerful, ancient figure who trained his son to follow in his criminal footsteps.”

However, Shang-Chi walked away from his father’s life after discovering his criminal behavior. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige explained, “This is not a ‘Luke, I am your father’ twist.”

“He knows who his father is, and he’s decided to leave that world behind before he’s pulled back into it,” Feige added.

While Wenwu is a new character, Schwartz and Feige told EW that the character has “gone by many names.” One of those names is the Mandarin.

The Mandarin was first name-dropped in Iron Man 3, but would later be revealed as a character actor named Trevor Slattery that had been hired by Aldrich Killian.

However, Marvel would eventually release a short titled “All Hail The King” that eventually revealed the real Mandarin did indeed exist in The Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now, this new character will apparently use the villain’s name.

Schwartz would go on to explain that Leung’s Wenwu will not be The Mandarin people expect from the comic books.

He stated, “I think people hear ‘the Mandarin’ and expect a very specific kind of thing, and that may not be the thing they’re getting.”

“They’re hopefully getting a more complex and layered take on the character than that name would lead you to,” he added.

Director Daniel Destin Cretton would elaborate on the character’s complexity stating, “A character like Wenwu could have easily been a one-dimensional villain with no heart.”

He added, “Tony opened this character up [so] this is an antagonist who has a deep ability to love.”

Honestly, it sounds like they are just doing Thanos and Gamora all over again just with Wenwu and Shang-Chi.

Then to add in some nostalgia bait, they decided to have Wenwu use the name Mandarin.

In the comics, The Mandarin has been a long-time foe of Tony Stark and Iron Man.

He was originally introduced in Tales of Suspense #50 back in 1964, where not only was he a match for Iron Man’s strengths with his rings, but Stark even described him as the “brainiest enemy” he’d ever faced!

In his original introduction, written by Stan Lee, The Mandarin is described as the “most mysterious, the most feared oriental of all time! Some claim he has lived for many centuries! Others claim he is far more than human! But none knows the real origin, the true power of the evil genius of the East–The Dreaded Mandarin!!”

What do you make of Schwartz’s comments that fans should not expect to see a comic accurate Mandarin in the film?

I swear to god I thought I saw an article about Rosemary's passing about a year or two ago but nope she's still kicking. What a trooper.
If Defoe's gonna be in it then that will be a treat. What about Franco?

A teaser trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released earlier today.

What a generic trailer. The cinematography is boring (typical of what the MCU has become), carefully crafted based on focus group feedback, they even have that ugly gook to do the quips. I'm actually surprised that they didn't use "War Ready" for the music.
Do you think the Chinese audience will want to watch that?

I think I've asked already but what the fuck;

are any of you excited for this retarded Spider-verse idea? I think it's the stupidest fucking shit they could have done but elsewhere it seems to be a highly anticipated thing.
It's stupid and comicbook-y, it's exactly what these movies should have been AND we get to see raimiverse characters again

They can't possible be doing this for the China market anymore. Every movie Disney makes for China flops in China. Mulan and Raya both grossed around $20 million in China. Meanwhile, Godzilla vs. Kong is closing in on $200 million.

Unless there is some edict from the commies where Disney has to release a movie set in China once a year or they can't release the next Avengers there or something.

Christopher Daniel Barnes confirmed he won't be in the film. Sucks...

Is Rosemary Harris going to appear or what? Sally Field? Dane DeHasn?

There hasn't been anything about the other Aunt Mays appearing, which makes sense because I doubt they'd be relevant to the plot. If they're in the movie, they'd probably just be cameos.

Dane DeHaan is also rumored to be in the film, there hasn't been as much talk about him though so it could just be rumors. DeHaan has denied his involvement but actors always say that.

There's been nothing about James Franco's involvement. He's had those sexual assault allegations around him for a while so maybe Marvel want to distance themselves, but that'd be real rich coming from the studio that used to employ Joss Whedon. He might not appear since the Raimiverse Harry is dead, but so is Norman and Dafoe's still in it. It's possible he had scheduling conflicts or they just couldn't fit him in the movie, or maybe he's just being really super secret. Kirsten Dunst is apparently coming back though.

It doesn't matter how much they fail, they'll keep gambling forever on the Chinese market because their corporation has more money than god and they only need to get one success to rise up in the ranks.
I just want the MCU to die. It outgrew its welcome by the third film and it absolutely destroyed the blockbuster "genre". A Sam Raimi film will be better without it being run through a committee to appeal to tumblerites and redditors.

I'll admit I'm curious about the Spider-Verse film because I want to see Tobey's Spiderman again, but I'm not watching it on theaters or on Disney+, I'll probably pirate it, since I don't like any of Tom Holland's spiderman flicks and I have my doubts on this third one.
I also want the MCU to finally flop and die, I'm sick of every other franchaise trying to copy the MCU's formula, not every single protagonist has to be a smartass quipping machine hollywood.

I have no reason to care about Shang Chi. Besides, the lead actors already rub me the wrong way as unbearable "AZN" shitheads.

Anyways, I finally watched Captain Karen because my sister is paying for D+ for her baby. It was okay, except for a tiny couple of cringe scenes where the "MUH FEMINIST VICTIM COMPLEX" are thrown like anvils at you. You could fanedit the audio track from these scenes to remove all the ridiculous "HURR HURR YOU ARE A FAILURE CUZ YOU FEMALE" bullying scenes, cut a few seconds here and there, and rebuild the audio from the no-name characters to make it so like she's just ambitious but very perseverating since she was a kid, think "I wanna reach for the stars and I will not stop chasing my dreams even if I endanger myself". It would become a standard passable Marvel movie. Also I liked how it's made to look like a prequel to GOTG1. And I hated how Fury's eye was reduced to a joke.

Obviously they're just rumors right now, but there have been a few people who are allegedly reliable making hints and talking about it. GWW reported that Dafoe was seen on set and said it was confirmed by the same source that told them about Molina returning as Doc Ock. There's this big masterpost on r/MarvelStudioSpoilers with a ton of info about the film.

A user who leaked Julia Louis-Dreyfus being in F&TWS also allegedly leaked a very vague outline of the plot which mentions Dafoe being the main villain, but it's worth noting that they failed r/MSS's verification process.
I could only hope she reprised her "Old Christine" character and thinks agent Coulson is her ex-husband. Hell, get that guy who played her brother, he's a decent actor.

Speaking of Spiderman 3, any truth to the rumors that one of Spiderman's foes will be Skip Westcott?
