I might be misremembering the past, but even without Corona was there ever such a delay between MCU films? Because if there is something that will definitely kill the franchise is stopping its momentum. Only the speds that are heavily invested into the MCU films will care to rewatch old films to remember the """setting""". The normalfags will simply not bother unless the films make it clear that they reset the continuity (and then normalfags will have even less reason to watch them).

The only upcoming MCU film that I think will still be a guaranteed smash success is Black Widow, although I could see the next Doctor Strange movie doing well since Sam Raimi's directing and the character of Doctor Strange also well-liked and established in the eyes of fans and audiences alike.

Unlike the divisive Captain Marvel or the obscure Shang Chi, Black Widow is a popular character who is already well-liked by both fans and regular audiences.

It's also a prequel so audiences probably don't need to be caught up on the previous Marvel movies as much, and it is the next one to be released, so the gap won't be quite as drastic as it would be for the other films.

Everything else is going to be a lot more risky. I've been predicting the MCU would eventually get a franchise-killing flop in the 2020's, but I didn't expect it to be so soon. COVID-19 has thrown all of us a curveball. I don't think we'll see the end of the movie theater industry or anything extremely severe, but I do think this pandemic will force studios to rely less on the Chinese market and probably help kill the capeshit fad of the 2010's.

My guess is Captain Marvel 2 will end up being the fabled nail in the coffin for the MCU. It's the furthest away and part of why the first Captain Marvel did so well despite the controversy was due to the hype train surrounding Endgame.

Captain Marvel 2 won't have that kind of hype going in its favor.

I liked the Doctor Strange movie and Raimi directing is a strong recommendation. BUT... they did reign it in from being a real surreal horror film and that's a bad sign. It's a bad sign because the only way the MCU can continue its success is to be an umbrella for a variety of different genres. A creepy movie in the MCU, a spy drama in the MCU, a low-key heist movie in the MCU... if you can have that variety and get away with it, the success of the MCU is open-ended. But if you constrain every movie to be an action movie with banter it'll die. And that's what they seem to want to do. It marred Thor: Ragnarok and from what I hear it will mar Doctor Strange 2.

Also Scarlett has that star power. People love her.

Rumor is it'll be a Skrull plot with her getting a bunch of female characters (allegedly Jessica Jones is among them) but I doubt it. I don't think Matt Murdock will be Spidey's lawyer either.

Well with the crisis going on as it is and Disney apparently bleeding money and taking a 7 billion loan, do any of you think some of these productions will get cancelled? Can we put a poll in to vote on which one gets axed?

I doubt any of them are going to be axed. If they're not releasing Black Widow directly to Disney+, they must be reasonably confident they'll do well enough at the box office to justify releasing them there.

I am not doubting Black Widow making money, though GitS did bomb with her as the lead.

It did bomb unfortunately. The outrage was funny though. People were pissed about her not being Japanese (tho theres a reason in film why she isnt) and most Asians don't care that she was Mokoto. They considered it an honor in fact. (Btw is the manga good? Bc I saw some random unnecessary lesbian scenes [tho apparently the scenes were not real and it was a simulation?] and a rather upsetting graphic depiction of a black woman getting gangbanged.....)
Also to be fair Mokotos been voiced by a blonde white woman forever until recently.

Also not to soapbox but the amount of articles that came out after Endgame released that were about her and the outrage that followed is pretty telling.

I mean she wasn't even in the final battle which is preposterous. Big mistake and Flopeye should have died. Why couldn't he make the sacrifice? His death would have probably meant something unlike what happened to Yelena-I mean fake Nat clone

ScarJo is a beloved actress but she's not a box-office guarantee. People have fondness for her as BW though and people seem way more excited for Taskmaster than I assumed they would be, so I'd say those two alone are enough to kick the solo film into success. The kind of success you don't just park on a streaming service and go "Here, enjoy".

Yeah the comics have tits if you're not reading the loser edition.

If anything gets cancelled, it’s gonna be one or more of the Disney+ shows. The movies that are most likely to flop (e.g. the ones featuring new, untested heroes) are the ones presumably already in production, and they’re sure as hell not going to cancel sequels like Gaurdians 3, BP2 or Captain Marvel 2.

As of now, as far as everyone knows, the MCU is still a reliable cash cow that hasn’t yet seen a bomb. Until that changes (and it very well might), there’s no reason for Disney to prematurely cancel movies that they’re almost certain will make a big profit.

I think the opposite will be true. If anything, with AMC facing bankruptcy and many other theaters that may go out of business, I think Disney is going to concentrate more on Disney+, although I think MCU will be the last things that will be cancelled. Honestly, Star Wars is more probable to face cancellations than Marvel (unless you're talking about the comics division, that thing is probably going to go under if Diamond goes out of business.)

I think there might be a case made for this being this being an opportunity to cut off a limb that had been infected for a while.
Movies have been an increasingly tough proposition for the mouse to actually turn a functional profit at after marketing and all, and this gives them an opportunity to control ALL the numbers coming out to investors, instead of needing to get creative Hollywood accounting while dealing with ticket sales info.
It might not be the best long-term solution but it seems like a pretty safe place to lick your wounds.

Just one, in the film where everyone was black.

All the more reason we need more represenation!

Besides, Doom is a pretty special case as far as villains go. I mean, he has a tonne of noble qualities, genuinely cares for his country and frankly the only person who has more reason to hate Reed Richards than Doom, is Reed Richard's wife. And I have to give them man points for his bold fashion choices. Dude legit does not give a damn.

I agree Idris Elba could be a good Doom - need someone who can almost go full Shakespeare to play Doom, but third person voice is critical.
