I still have strong reservations based on press comments and the whole RDJ as Doom. And I still find the casting weird. (Am I the only one who find's Johnny's face kind of weird? Honestly, same for Sue Storm. Thing seems to have nice manner about him, though). I am however more or less okay with sex-swapping Silver Surfer. Norad was never a particularly interesting or deep character and so long as the surfer remains (a) silver, (b) athletic and (c) stark naked, I feel the essentials are checked.

And I will at least say I like the aesthetic.

Fuck it, I have nothing better to do, so I'm gonna do a kiwi version, describing which ended up being relevant and which didn't. I'm putting each phase under a spoiler because this is going to be long.

Spoiler: Phase 1

• Iron Man: Nick Fury breaks into Tony's house and tells him about the Avenger Initiative.
  • Status: Relevant, teases the eventual Avengers movie
• The Incredible Hulk: Not actually a stinger, but the last scene where Tony talks to Ross about a team getting together was initially supposed to be one.
  • Status: Kind of relevant, also points to the Avengers and confirms links between otherwise unrelated movies going forward
• Iron Man 2: Agent Coulson radios in that they've found Thor's hammer.
  • Status: Relevant, teases Thor
• Thor: Nick Fury shows the Tesseract to Dr. Selvig, who is being controlled by Loki.
  • Status: Kind of relevant, sets up a plot thread for the Avengers movie
• Captain America: Just a straight-up trailer for The Avengers.
  • Status: Not even really a stinger, so this doesn't count
• The Avengers: Mid-credits shows off Thanos, post-credits is the shawarma gag.
  • Status: Mid-credits is obviously relevant for the overall direction of phases 2 and 3, post-credits is just a joke

Overall, most of these stingers ended up being relevant in some way, mostly to the phase as a whole, teasing either the next hero in the lineup or the overall Avengers team-up. It also had the big reveal that they'd be building towards Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet in the future.

Spoiler: Phase 2

• Iron Man 3: It's revealed that Tony was previously talking about his hangups over what happened to Bruce, who tells him he isn't that kind of doctor.
  • Status: Irrelevant, just a joke
• Thor 2: Mid-credits reveals the Tesseract and Aether are Infinity Stones, post-credits is a joke scene with an ice beast chasing pigeons.
  • Status: Mid-credits is kind of relevant in setting up a couple of the Infinity Stones and confirming they'll continue playing a role, post-credits is just a joke
• Captain America 2: Mid-credits shows Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in stasis, post-credits shows the Winter Soldier at a Cap museum exhibit.
  • Status: Kind of relevant, sets up characters in Age of Ultron and shows Winter Soldier will likely continue playing a role
• Guardians of the Galaxy: The Collector gets heckled by Howard the Duck.
  • Status: Irrelevant
• Avengers: Age of Ultron: Thanos grabs the Infinity Gauntlet and says he'll have to take the stones himself.
  • Status: Not just irrelevant, but deemed non-canon
• Ant-Man: Mid-credits scene shows Hope becoming the Wasp, post-credits scene is a flash-forward to Cap 3 where Falcon decides to call in Ant-Man to help them rescue Bucky.
  • Status: Barely relevant, Wasp is pretty much a nothing character and the flash-forward isn't all that important

Phase 2 is where things start to break down. If the stingers aren't gags, they're hardly relevant beyond "this character exists!" or "we're still doing this thing we were going to do!" Hell, they ended up contradicting the Ultron stinger entirely because the Infinity Gauntlet stuff wouldn't be coming for several more years.

Spoiler: Phase 3

• Captain America 3: Mid-credits has Bucky getting frozen in Wakanda until they can break his brainwashing, post-credits has Peter Parker telling lies about the events of the movie to Aunt May.
  • Status: Barely relevant, just takes Bucky out of the picture for a few movies and confirms that, duh, Spider-Man movies are coming
• Doctor Strange: Mid-credits has Strange agree to help Thor and Loki find Odin, post-credits has Mordo steal Jonathan Pangborn's magic because there are "too many sorcerers."
  • Status: Mid-credits is kind of relevant in teasing Thor 3, post-credits is entirely irrelevant as this plotline has not been touched on since
• GotG 2: Jesus Christ there are so many stingers: Kraglin fucks up with Yondu's arrow, Stakar reassembles his team, Ayesha creates Adam Warlock, Peter scolds Groot for having a messy room, and the Watchers get tired of Stan Lee and leave him behind.
  • Status: The gags are irrelevant, and the plot-related ones are only kind of relevant to the eventual GotG3
• Spider-Man 1: Mid-credits has Scorpion wanting to team up with Vulture to take out Spider-Man, but he doesn't want to; post-credits is a Cap PSA.
  • Status: Irrelevant, the former is never followed up on (especially with Vulture getting Morb'd) and the latter is just a gag
• Thor 3: Mid-credits has the Asgardian refugees headed to Earth only to run into Thanos, post-credits has the Grandmaster trying to take credit for the uprising.
  • Status: Mid-credits is kind of relevant in teasing part of Infinity War, post-credits is just a gag
• Black Panther: Mid-credits has T'Challa revealing that we wuz Wakanda 'n sheeit, post-credits has Bucky waking up with his mind control gone.
  • Status: Basically irrelevant, there seem to be no evidence that the general tech level has improved at all in future movies, and post-credits just shows Bucky is definitely coming back again
• Avengers: Infinity War: Nick Fury calls Captain Marvel on his pager before getting Thanos'd.
  • Status: Laughably irrelevant outside of being a teaser for her movie since she does basically nothing in Endgame
• Ant-Man 2: Mid-credits has Scott be stuck in the Quantum Realm when everyone else gets Thanos'd, post-credits has the giant ant playing drums
  • Status: Barely relevant in that it just sets up where Scott was during the timeskip, post-credits is just a gag
• Captain Marvel: Mid-credits has her show up finally, post-credits has the cat vomiting up the Tesseract
  • Status: Similarly laughably irrelevant to Infinity War (they seriously wanted to make her the face of the MCU going forward?)
• Avengers: Endgame: No stinger at all, though the sound of Tony forging the original Iron Man suit does play towards the end of the credits
  • Status: Well c'mon I can't really count this one
• Spider-Man 2: Mid-credits has J. Jonah Jameson reveal Peter's secret identity, post-credits reveals that Nick Fury and Maria are Skrulls
  • Status: Varying, mid-credits does eventually get followed up on, post-credits...uh, did anyone watch Secret Invasion?

Yeah, I definitely see the trend now, where the stingers are generally less and less important to future events in the series. There are a few teasers that get followed up on eventually, but there are also a lot that haven't seen the light of day since (Doctor Strange, Spider-Man 1) or are basically meaningless (Black Panther, everything to do with Captain Marvel).

Spoiler: Phase 4

• Black Widow: Yelena accepts an assignment to kill Hawkeye, who she believes is responsible for Natasha's death.
  • Status: Barely relevant, just teases that she'll show up in the Hawkeye series
• Shang-Chi: Mid-credits has them discussing the origin of the rings and that they might be a beacon, then karaoke; post-credits has a woman take over the Ten Rings and make it gender-equal and eco-friendly.
  • Status: Irrelevant thus far as Shang-Chi hasn't appeared since then, post-credits is just fucking laughable
• Eternals: Mid-credits has a few of the Eternals who went into space run into some other characters who know where the rest of them are; post-credits has Dane about to pick up a blade when another Blade asks him if he's ready for that.
  • Status: Completely irrelevant, I doubt we'll ever see the Eternals again and the Blade movie is dead as a doornail
• Spider-Man 3: Mid-credits yeets Eddie and Venom back to their universe but leaves a bit of symbiote behind, post-credits was originally a trailer for Doctor Strange 2 but was replaced with a scene showing how much Peter was erased from everyone's memories.
  • Status: Irrelevant, especially since the universe-hopping Eddie did ended up being meaningless
• Doctor Strange 2: Mid-credits has Strange go with (off-screen) Clea through a portal to stop an incursion across reality, post-credits has the pizza ball salesman stop hitting himself.
  • Status: Irrelevant thus far, no mention of this incursion has come up since then to my knowledge, post-credits is a gag
• Thor 4: Mid-credits reveals Zeus is still alive and sends Hercules to go fuck up Thor, post-credits has Jane Foster show up in Valhalla.
  • Status: Irrelevant thus far, though I guess Hercules might show up sometime in the future
• Black Panther 2: T'CHALLA FUCKST'Challa had a son in secret.
  • Status: Uh...irrelevant I guess? Even if he's supposed to be important later on, he's just a kid at the moment, so he can't really be relevant for a long time

Man, Phase 4 really was a huge nothingburger, wasn't it? Not to say that none of this stuff will ever be relevant, but it really isn't looking too good, especially since they've had to do quite the retool getting rid of Kang. Thus, anything pointing to multiverse stuff will probably be either heavily reworked or discarded entirely. And the Blade and Venom cameos ended up meaning jackshit.

Spoiler: Phase 5

• Ant-Man 3: Mid-credits has the army of Kangz starting to chimp out and get ready to launch their multiverse invasion, post-credits is a scene from Loki teasing another Kang variant.
  • Status: hahahahahaha so completely fucking irrelevant rip bozo
• GotG 3: Mid-credits has Rocket talk music with the team before heading out on a mission, post-credits has Peter eating breakfast with his grandpa.
  • Status: Thankfully irrelevant, here's hoping the Guardians get to go off on their own adventures and escape this stupid corporate monstrosity
• The Marvels: Mid-credits yeets Monica to the X-Men universe, post-credits is just audio of cat vomit
  • Status: Probably irrelevant overall considering who knows what the fuck they're going to do with this multiverse shit
• Deadpool & Wolverine: Mid-credits is a behind-the-scenes montage from the various Fox movies, post-credits is Deadpool proving to the TVA it wasn't his fault Johnny Storm died.
  • Status: Just nostalgia and gags, so no relevance
• Captain America 4: Samuel Sterns warns Captain Falcon that Earth is going to be invaded by other worlds.
  • Status: I guess kind of relevant, might have initially been referring to the Kangz but might be reworked for the Doomsday shit

Jonathan Majors getting shitcanned really did a number on their ability to set anything up in these stingers. The multiverse shit is all up in the air now, and any teasers for the original direction are now irrelevant. Aside from that, about half of the stingers aren't even trying to set anything up at all.

Y'know, writing all this out really makes me realize just how pointless all that speculation and hype was over the years. Most of the teasers were barely important at all, and a lot of what they teased ended up wildly different when the finished product came out. But because the movies were so long before, your memory got fuzzy and led you to ascribe greater importance to them than they actually had.

To think, there are idiots like Moviebob who spend countless hours analyzing this shit to try and figure out what's coming next, when the reality is that basically none of it matters. Incredible.
