The Guardians special is a weird beast.Guardians Holiday Special was a nice palate cleanser to Phase 4 in the same vein that Werewolf by Night was.
I think, going by Ms. Marvel and the Avengercon bit, there is knowledge of the Guardians in regards to the Blip, but they're extremely overshadowed by the Avengers. That and the whole China theater area is filled with cosplayers already. Might have fooled less Kamala-tier autistic people. The Guardians special is a weird beast.
On the one hand, I appreciate that the spent a decent chunk of change on a throwaway Christmas special.
On the other hand, a lot of it felt like they were just padding the runtime with random scenes of Mantis twerking at a gay club or letting Kevin Bacon sing for 10 minutes. Like most streaming shows, it would've been a lot better at the 20 minutes they would've had on broadcast tv rather than the bloated 35 minutes it ended up being.
There is one funny joke in the special (you'll know it when you see it). Sadly, a lot of the "humor" felt like improv. I also didn't like that they made Mantis so bitchy, which, upon reflection, may be a result of the improv. The special once again raises the ugly specter of continuity. That being, why doesn't anybody recognize two of the people who literally brought four billion people back to life, including many of their friends and loved ones? Half the issues in the special would be resolved by one person being like, "oh hey, those are two of the heroes who helped Tony Stark bring my son back to life. Let's see what they want and if we can help them!"
The family stuff was the strongest aspect yeah. I feel every Christmas special (MCU or otherwise) is contractually obligated to have antics to balance out the saccharine parts. 'Tis the season and all that.I probably would've liked the GotG Holiday Special more if it were 30 minutes and focused more on the family aspect they bring up, rather than the goofy slap stick stuff.
You can apparently see a female character who looks like Mantis when Ego's going through his fuck-parade bit with Peter later in the second film. He told her that he found her as an egg, but the reality was that he sensed her powers and just allowed her to live (unlike the rest of his spawn). They actually took some episodes off D+ prior to the special dropping that spoiled the twist, but I wasn't aware of their connection before now either. It's one of those things that feels like a retcon when it kind of, sort of isn't.Speaking of the family stuff, was Ego being Mantis' father ever brought up or hinted at before? I never really read their relationship as 'father and daughter' in GotG 2.
I don't think the MCU would have gotten to where it is today without talented and already famous actors stepping into the roles initially. RDJ, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth helped bring those characters to life, and they're basically synonymous at this point. But that's clearly not the case with a lot of the newer characters, where I can barely remember the character's name and definitely don't know the actor playing them. As they keep scraping the bottom of the barrel for whatever D-list character they haven't put on film yet and keep burning through recognizable actors in one-off roles, this problem will only get worse.
That's another problem they keep having, where basically every villain character gets killed off for good in their first appearance. Not only does this mean they miss out on being able to use the character again in the future, it also means that the actor probably won't be coming back either, since they very rarely cast the same actor for two different roles. Possibly never, I honestly can't think of an example. They'll probably work around that with multiverse bullshit, but that's just a narrative crutch.
So yeah, I think Tarantino has it right in a way, people aren't really going to see movie stars, they're going to see the characters first and foremost. But the death of the movie star has been a thing for a lot longer than the MCU's existence.
Considering that China seems to be going in the direction of Cultural Revolution 2.0 under Xi Jinping, you can count on Western movies being allowed less and less over time. If your movie needs China to make a profit at this point, you might as well shelve it.Shocking. Wakanda Forever will be banned in China. Who could have seen this happen?
