Update: the answer was because the dress was counterfeit. Thank god I hadn't bought it yet. Unfortunately, this means it's back to looking at dresses and back to being miserable at the way my body looks
congrats on your imminent nuptials gorl!
what kinda styles do you like? (neckline, sleeve type, length, embellishments etc)

if you're e-shopping you should post screenshots so we can all see :3 check out this site too, they have a very nice quality but cheap wedding line. i got one of these in pink for a party, i had to size down but they have nicely made/positioned built-in cups so you're safe to go braless.

I just bought moonlight and daylight to give it a go. The youtube reviews didn't have me too confident in the product but I want to at least try it.
The lip sets? I have those, too.

If you're into long wearing lip colors and liquid lipsticks, then you're gonna hate them. If you enjoy lighter, more pinky-coral colors that fade really nicely and not patchy at all (so you don't look ridiculous and feel the need to reapply ASAP), then I think you will like them.

I like them. They're not the best lip products I've ever tried or anything, but I do like the colors, and I ended up wearing them a lot over the Summer. My only real complaint is that the lip colors are very absurdly similar, so I think that buying both sets was kind of a waste.

Random question: have any of you ever worn gloves with a formal dress? Some of my friends have on special occasions when we've felt like dressing up and going to a nice restaurant or bar.
I've worn gloves for events like NYE before, where I know that a lot of people are dressing up.

And over the past year, I have become obsessed with vintage pillbox hats. Hats and gloves need to make a comeback!

Those are lovely, I'll check it out!
I like floor length or sweep train. Not picky about neckline. Fond of elbow length sleeves. My kingdom for a dress that has both sleeves AND a back. I love lace. Not fond of sequins or anything scratchy. It's in early April, so nothing too light or airy.

I would love to since I absolutely adore long, elegant gloves (and those dainty little to-the-wrist gloves as well~), but I’m on my phone everywhere I go so it would be a little inconvenient... My involuntary “look” every single winter is the Michael Jackson one-glove while my other hand gets frostbite ‘cause I want to play Fishdom.

I have not, but it sounds like fun to do so, especially at a restaurant. I'd probably opt in for some fingerless gloves because I know I'd get the finger parts dirty from food or something lol.
My girlfriend used to have a forearm-length pair of black satin gloves. They were fingered, but she usually prefers to wear fingerless ones since they're more tactile.

Some of my other female friends have fingered elbow-length white gloves, and they've worn them when we feel like dressing up. They put them on for pictures, but they usually take them off for dinner and cocktails.

@StarkRavingMad I completely agree. I can't really put my finger on it, but certain accessories add so much to developing a traditionally formal aesthetic. I find myself wearing tie clips and cuff links for that exact purpose.

I even bought a pair of white kid gloves off of eBay that unfortunately no longer fit since I lost weight, but I got a pair of black leather touchscreen-enabled dress gloves recently and I look forward to wearing them with a suit this winter.

@one_time_user I live in Chicago, so those looks are unfortunately not very common around here due to our bitter cold winters. They're gorgeous, though. Most well-dressed women that I notice around here tend to wear long wool coats with full sleeves and short leather gloves in the winter.

@Gorlax If you like the look, I have two suggestions for you.
My girlfriend wears lace gloves that are technically fingered but have the upper half of each digit exposed for more tactile uses.

The other option is to look for a pair of opera-length gloves that have an opening at the wrist for you to slip your hand in and out of when you need extra grip on something. These are called mousquetaires and are to this day mandatory for women at a lot of white-tie events in America. I would suggest checking eBay because a new pair can cost more than $200, but there are probably cheaper silk options.

EDIT: @soryu may appreciate them as well, since at cocktail hour or dinner you can unbutton them, fold the fingers in, and slip your hand out to drink or eat. That way, you can slip your hand right back in for dancing instead of having to pull them all the way off and on your arms.

I own several formal gowns but I have NOWHERE TO WEAR THEM.

I was looking forward to wearing one to a fancy event this spring but papa coof said no.
Once your area has reached post-covid status, I would suggest hosting a small get together at your place and asking guests to wear the most formal clothing they own. If you can make it a regular thing, it will have the dual effect of not only giving you an excuse to be glam, but it will normalize it among your friends and everyone will look beautiful.

I have the same problem with my traditional menswear: despite the fact that most teachers in my district dress casually, I wear a tie to work almost every day because I want an excuse to do so. I try to buy a suit or sport coat once a year to build a sizable wardrobe for dressing to impress, but I still only get to wear it a few times a year.

Honestly, when my area is post-covid I'm going to commit to saving up as much money as I can so that once a month I can take my girlfriend, her friends, and their dates out to a cocktail lounge, a nice restaurant for dinner, and a jazz club for dancing. That's what I always envisioned my late 20s to be like.

I grew up wearing gloves as a little kid and never grew out of it. I love them. They help keep your hands clean and also protect from aging. My mom always wears them too and she has 0 sun spots on her hands. You get the odd lock in new places, especially since young woman don't wear them out casually day to day anymore. I was hoping Covid would make them trendy again but so far no luck.

I think there's still an outside chance they'll make a comeback. I've noticed that some people are adapting masks and other PPE to add to their own style (e.g. paisley masks, chain headstraps), and given how inexpensive a pair of white cotton dress gloves is, I think it could work if ladies are willing to make that kind of statement with their accessories.

Out of curiosity, what kinds of gloves do you wear, and to what occasions? I think it's neat that you and your mom keep up the tradition.

Day to day leather, I drive/fly a lot for work so I find them the most resistant. If I'm going out to lunch or nicer stuff with friends I'll do a suede or cotton, just depends on if its an indoor outdoor event. I don't actually wear them for formal events. Unless its a nice wedding or a decent symphony I think its looks a little pretentious to show up in silk gloves.

Not bad at all, I could see that being quite harmonious with your outfits based on how you described it.

My black leather ones do go well with my leather jackets and my charcoal suit, but I do have a couple blue sport coats and a medium blue that I worry would clash with the black. Brown seems a bit too rustic for my own style, so I've been considering getting a gray pair in either suede or leather to go with those.

When I went down a size after losing ~25 pounds, I donated my white kid ones since they no longer fit properly. Part of me does love how white gloves go with a gray suit, but I know it's really ostentatious so I probably won't get another pair.

Medium blue would look better with brown than black. But I don't think it'd clash to horribly, It can be pulled off. I see men do it all the time. Usually with the addition of purples. Things like this though are the reason I quit color. All the rules and stress of the color wheel are the last thing I need in my life. Congrats on the 25 loss!

Thank you! I should try it on to see how it would look, I do love wearing pinks and purples with blue for a slightly more feminine look.

My attitude towards suiting is that as long as it's done tastefully, it's good to over-accesorize slightly. Aside from the obligatory tie I try to wear at least a tie clip and a watch every time I wear a suit, and if the colors are subtle enough I may add one extra piece such as a pocket square or lapel pin. If I'm going somewhere where suits are the norm, I'll wear a French-cuffed shirt with links that match the clip.

I never wear a tie fastener with a vest, but one of my favorite looks is a charcoal gray suit, white shirt, and white tie. It's a very softly monochromatic look and one that I feel would warrant white gloves if I wore it to a daytime wedding or to church.

This winter, I'm going to definitely try the black gloves with a suit, probably skipping the watch to avoid additional encumbrances. Do you typically wear your dressier suede/cotton gloves with a suit, or a dress? (And do you ever wear white ones yourself?)

I think its a good mix of both pants suits/skirt suits. I tend to avoid dresses unless it's a formal event. So I don't actually own any casual dresses. (I never really wear white or light colors for that matter. So no white gloves.)
