Does anyone have a preferred matte top coat? I'm using OPI, but it seems to make my color chip more easily. Or is that just the nature of matte nails? :(

It's unfortunately just a problem with matte polish in general. I'm partial to the Young Nails matte topcoat but that might be hard to find. I did like the Essie Matte About You topcoat, too.

(Side note: Does anybody remember when OPI came out with matte polishes several years ago? I worked in Trade Secret at the time and we got SO MANY returns because you couldn't get lotion or any kind of oil on the polish or it'd goop up and come off.)

I would use golds/tans/reds (think like a cranberry shade)
Seconding this. Rose golds, copper, bronze, and a pale pink/gold here and there would look good too. I'm pretty pale with super dark eyes and I also like wearing purples and greens (olive greens). Jewel tones in general, depending on your skin's undertone.

I found this really helpful makeup tutorial for those of you who are just beginning

Thirded. If you have the budget for it, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette would be a good way to go. I've yet to see anyone who isn't Kailyn make an unflattering look with the colors from it.

I have an unhealthy addiction to the NYX Liquid Suedes. I still prefer LimeCrime/KVD liquid lipsticks but when I'm buying colors I wouldn't wear as often (black, cobalt blue, etc) I'd much rather spend $6 or $7 than $20. Also, Ulta sale!

I bought...
  • Alien (black)
  • Jet Set (cobalt blue)
  • Subversive Socialite (deep wine purple)
  • Oh, Put it On! (like Subversive Socialite but darker)
I also ordered a couple things from the Hello Kitty x Colourpop collab because I never fucking grew up.

I picked up the Pixi cheek gels at Target, along with MultiBalm in Wild Rose, a 6 shadow palette, and the Glow Tonic. Holy fuck the glow tonic is amazing. I've been using it about two weeks now and my skin feels fantastic. I swear my pores are smaller, my skin is smoother and softer... I also grabbed the Maybelline Colossal mascara to switch it up from my usual NYX Pinup Tease. I love pinup tease but it's something that needs coconut oil to get removed. Pinup Tease is honest to god incredible. I jumped in a hot tub with it and it didn't run.

The Colossal is awesome. Serious volume, nice length. I don't wear falsies because they end up butting against my glasses and driving me nuts. I have long natural lashes as it is so I just don't bother any more. When I lost most of my lashes in 2010 I would apply those little tiny tuft ones instead of the strip lashes. They mercifully grew back though.

Growing up is overrated. Obviously, growing up in the sense that you can take care of yourself is necessary, but that whole "I'm a serious person who only likes serious things because being an adult is serious business" aspect of growing up is lame.

My immature makeup confession? I own a shit-ton of the Tokidoki eyeshadow palettes from when they did makeup for Sephora.

I am such a sucker for the NYX Liquad Suedes (tea and cookies is my favorite by far). I have four of them now. I still prefer KVD but 20 is a lot.

I just ordered some colorpop liquid lipsticks though and I'm hoping they're worth it

Okay, so, I decided to touch up my hair. It's an orange-auburn at the ends, and my staff party is tomorrow night. In case anyone took photos, I wanted to look nice. I treated myself to some Directions semi-permanent dyes. I mixed two spoons of tangerine (a dark orange) with one spoon of vermilion red (a rich, medium red). That red is fucking intense and now my hair is bright red at the ends. If anyone needs a really intense red, I'd recommend it. Otherwise, I'm pissed. My uniform at work is a green polo with black trousers. I feel like a walking Christmas cracker right now.

@bloodcoffee I'd appreciate if you could let me know how that works for you long-term. I know people who swear by Directions dyes, but my experience wasn't great. I found the red faded into pink very quickly, and I was having to re-dye it a couple of times a week to keep it red. Not sure if I got a bad batch or if it just didn't work with my hair, but I was disappointed all the same.

Yeah, red tends to steamroll orange, because the pigments tend to be so much more intense... Try a 3:1 orange-to-red ratio, maybe? Do you know where you could get your hands on a direct dye lifter? Something you could use to strip the color out and try again? I'd recommend clarifying your hair over and over but your party is tomorrow night.

I found Directions a little disappointing, too. I tried "Alpine Green" a couple of years ago and the color was beautiful when I first did it, but it didn't stay that well. My hair was in good condition too, so it's not like my hair was all blown out and that's why the color wouldn't stick.

Who does face masks?
I know Korean masks and mud masks are really in vogue. Personally, I think those buyable ones are total rip offs. The Korean ones also weird me out a bit because they're always those cloth ones so it looks like you're doing a cheap Leather Face cosplay. I also prefer my masks be wash off because I feel like it opens my pores and gets it ready for my face wash.

If you use masks, consider making your own. Even if aren't into DIY you can just buy a bag of your clay of choice and add water. I really like crafting so I made my own with all kinds of clays, essential oils, aloe juice, and even activated charcoal. If anyone wants any recipes or has any questions feel free to ask me :)

I also find using a make up brush to spread the mask on is more pleasant than using your fingers. Just something about clay on my fingers annoys me more than it should.

I'll let you know how it goes. I'm not fond of pinky reds myself, so in the past, I always mixed Manic Panic's Vampire Red with Hi-Octane Orange by Special Effects, in a 4:1 ratio (ish). It was a very warm orange-red, and never faded to pink. It's a combo I'd swear by. Use SLS free shampoo and it will not budge easily.

In other news, my staff Christmas party is tonight and I love my jumper.

I've never used a sheet mask but I think they're super-weird and I imagine it would be really unpleasant to use, at least for me. Right now I'm using this mask once or twice a week (I like it, despite the burning when I first apply it) but I'm always on the lookout for new stuff to try.

And, pro tip: Either buy a shitty ELF brush or get one from the craft store. My mask brush when I was in esthetics school cost me like $3 at Hobby Lobby.

They're not unpleasant necessarily, but they tend to feel kind of cool and it can be hard to set it right so the eye holes match with your eyes and all that. I tend to end up having flaps going everywhere and just opening it can mean tearing the mask and making it fit worse. My biggest issue is that I don't feel like they do much. You're supposed to use them and pat in any excess 'stuff' after you take the mask off. I dunno, I feel like it's kind of a waste.

I looked at the ingredients on the one you linked and it looks pretty good. If you're so inclined you can make a dupe. One of the reasons I DIY masks (aside from I find it fun) is that you can save some money since you don't need any frills. Not that I'm paranoid about preservatives, I get why you need them in products that might sit on shelf or contain water, but I'd rather not pay for stuff like that or color. I actually have most of the main ingredients of that mask now.

If you have issues with acne, consider this AC Clean Up pink powder mask by Etude House. It's a Korean brand. I think the idea is to use it like a regular all over mask but I find it works better as a spot treatment. Dab some on any problem spots once a day, wash it off, and repeat for a few days. It doesn't burn and it's worked well for me. Honestly, this is the one mask I might consider buying a full size of.

I'd love to DIY masks but honestly I don't have to time to track down ingredients, mix them together, etc. I just buy stuff off the shelf because it's easier, plus I don't use anything expensive anyway; I think the most pricey mask I've ever bought myself was like $12.

I'm actually sensitive-combination. I very rarely get spots anymore, but that's good to know about, since the ones I get tend to be tiny but stubborn.

Speaking of, Korean beauty fans, Skin Food has a US-based online store now! Most of the products are around the same price you can get them on Amazon for, too, with the added bonus of not having to wait a month for your product. Only thing is, they don't have the full line; the BB creams aren't available, nor are some of the makeup products. But still, it's worth checking out.

$12 isn't bad, especially if it lasts a while. I've seen some brands that are just completely overpriced it's ridiculous. For example this GlamGlow mud they sell at Sephora. I got a sample of it and it worked fine enough as a spot treatment, but $69 for a full sized? Fuck no.

Seabuckthorn oil is pricey, but if you dilute it with water it can work as a spot treatment in a pinch. Just watch out- the oil itself is orange so it's best to be used as an overnight thing.

I like SkinFood. so it's cool they have a US site now. I did a Korean beauty box and got some royal honey toner from them. I think Korean brands are generally really good. Except the masks!

What kind did you get? I got a free Ultra Matte one and I'm impressed. The color is Saturday and it's a dark red/brown. I have some Ultra Satins but I'm making myself wait until Christmas to open up the rest of my goodies--most of the Hello Kitty collection that was left. The ultra matte was definitely long wearing for me. Drying, yes, but long-wearing as fuck. I always put balm on about 15 minutes before applying and then wipe off excess before applying color. I know that formulas are sometimes different from color to color but my first impression is definite satisfaction. Wasn't tacky like the liquid suedes and dried to a texture similar to KVD and Lime Crime.

For face masks, I occasionally use the Queen Helene mint julep mask on trouble spots since it's worked well for me there. Smells so wonderful too. My other obsession is Daiso masks. I have two sheet masks, one is coenzyme q-10 and the other is collagen, I believe. They come in a decently sized pack and I do them about once a week or so. I haven't had issues with them tearing or being hard to line up with my actual face. I believe both of them also have that snail goop. The other treat I love from Daiso is this peel off pore mask that comes in a tube. If you do your whole face you will absolutely look like old timey blackface and you really don't need to do your whole face anyway. Avoid eyebrows/any facial hair as I have seen other people's goofs with this thing ripping brows out. I treat my nose every now and then and my god peeling it off will make your eyes water but it's so fucking satisfying and pretty effective.

After my full-torso-arms-and-face hives debacle I figured out it was likely the deep cleaning I was trying to give the house before vacation. I was almost gutted because I thought it might have been the Pixi Glow Tonic since that was a new product for my skin and hardly anything ever causes issues for me. Was terrified it was my new mascara as I had fucking hives on my eyelids, but when it spread over the rest of me it was a little clearer. Fucking sucked regardless.

I use GlamGlow, but I usually only buy it when it's on sale or in gift sets. They've had it on Haute Look a couple of times this year, for instance.

I tried L'Oreal's new mask line in an attempt to see if they could function as cheaper replacements, because the ingredients are similar. The L'Oreal masks are so strongly scented that they give me asthma attacks.

That's pretty much everything L'Oreal makes now, unfortunately. I used to get their hair products for really cheap where I worked and I only ended up being able to use the Absolut Repair Lipidium blow-dry cream. Everything else had so much fragrance I either couldn't stand to smell it on myself or it broke my skin out. Which is a shame because the products are great, or at least the ones I used were.
