I've never owned or been able to wear foundation in my life because I've never found a shade that came even close to my skin tone. I'm too pale for normal shades and not pale enough for light shades, and not warm/cool/neutral enough for warm/cool/neutral shades. Guess I'll just have to mix different shades of everything together for the rest of my life lol

I refuse to pay big money for foundation so I started mixing these whitening drops by The Body Shop into my usual high street/drugstore foundation. They're fantastic if you wanna give them a try, and they don't reduce coverage. They have other drops for making a colour deeper if you need to go the other direction with fixing your foundation shade.

@fire_fly Have you tried mouse foundations? I can't recommend much in the way of shade as I've not yet found one that matches me (so many pale ppl on this forum) and I need a yellow pigment or I look washed out, but I've found mouse foundation give me the best stay and coverage, and I have really bad skin and freckles.

I have, but it turned, like, bubblegum pink on my face. It was bizarre. I've only ever seen liquid and powder foundations in my shade, and those are few and far between. Oh, and there's one new stick foundation I swatched and it looked good, but I think it was from Hourglass so you know it was hella expensive...

I'm hoping that investing in a new primer and concealer and getting shade-matched for a pressed powder will work for me, I can't really afford to just keep buying new shit.

If you're near a Sephora, you can go in an request samples of foundations you'd like to try. I also get samples from my local MAC counter, too. I used a sample of the Nars Sheerglow Foundation for like a month last year, all from a sample I got. That way, you can keep trying things without having to sink money into them.

I got a few samples of some liquid foundations back when I made this post but they all ended up looking gross on my face after a few hours. I'm going to try the new Sephora brand Matte Perfection pressed powder since my Kat Von D is running out, but now that I have it in hand (they don't have my shade, porcelain neutral, in stores so I had to order it) I'm not sure the coverage will be enough. I've got a lot of hyperpigmentation and redness that I have to spackle over.

Any tips for someone who's never applied makeup?

I'd like to start using concealer to hide my atrocious acne and red splotches, but I have no idea where to even start.

get into a good skincare routine the bare minimum being a morning cleanse follow by toner (witch hazel is fine) followed my moisturized and a zinc based sunblock. Go to a pharmacy and see if you can find a green concealer stick which you can use to neutralize the red marks, and then over it you can use a foundation that matches your skin tone. Using a sponge or a brush really does make the foundation look ten times better and natural than trying to just kinda pat it on. Then at night if you wore sunblock/product double cleanse, follow with toner and moisturizer.

...That sounds like a lot of work. Jesus.

Some tips:

  • Oil cleansing is your friend. There are tons of oil cleansers on the market but you can just use straight oil, too. I've used olive and coconut oils, as well as the babassu oil blend I use in my hair, and I've seen nothing but improvement. I use it to take my makeup off and then I cleanse again with a glycolic acid cleanser, it's working wonders for me.
  • If you use any skincare product with a peeling agent (i.e. anything with retinol, AHAs, etc) it's extremely important that you use sunscreen to protect your skin because you'll be more susceptible to sun damage.

Now, as far as foundation goes, liquid has more coverage but if you have a lot of spots I'd recommend pressed powder. It won't cover absolutely everything, but it won't be as heavy on your problem areas, either. Just dab on your concealer, blend it in, and put the powder on top.

Also, there's a line that Ulta carries (I'm not sure where you live or if you'll have access to it but I'm just gonna throw this out there) that's for treating acne but the products are all really gentle. It's called Formula 10.0.6 and it's great, even for my sensitive, combination skin. The mattifying moisturizer is a Holy Grail product for me. And the products are all $6-10 so you can get a full, highly effective regimen on the cheap.

FYI, if you want to use green concealer underneath your foundation and concealer, you need to pat the other makeup on top, or you'll just smudge off the green concealer underneath. Using clean fingers is fine, but I recommend a sponge like a beauty blender.
What does the green concealer do that other concealers don't? Why do I need it?

ATTENTION MAKEUP-WEARING, OILY-SKINNED KIWIS:

So, I mentioned a few posts back that I got the new Sephora Matte Perfection foundation? I've been using it the last couple of days and it's AWESOME! It covers well and it holds up throughout the day... I don't even use setting spray anymore, just the powder, and it takes 8-10 hours for shine to break through at all. Which is amazing given that even with the most mattifying foundation I've ever used (Kat Von D's pressed powder) I'd still wind up with weird little puddles of oil and foundation on my face after a while...

Check it out, it's definitely been $20 well-spent for me. Unfortunately they don't have all the shades in the stores, I had to order mine (Porcelain Neutral) online, but still. Worth it.

And whatever you end up doing, please please please avoid touching your face with your fingers/hands and keep your brushes clean, should you continue with makeup. It's recommended to thoroughly wash face brushes once a week. That way you're not putting bacteria and assorted scrod back on your face. When I started wearing foundation there were times when I wondered why I was breaking out and realized it was because my brush was nasty.

I just found my new favorite drugstore foundation, the Milani 2-in-1. Shades are definitely in the darker range but I'm mixed with a warmer yellow undertone and am just in love. Even though it hasn't been extremely cold/windy in SF yet this year my skin has felt drier and my usual MUFE Velvet Mat that I wore in the summer started making me look like I'd rubbed my face in bonito shavings when I started getting drier.

I have shade #2 for "light skin with golden undertones" and my god it's fucking amazing. I am not particularly light by ~beauty standards~. It's also 9.99

I am forever impressed by full coverage acne foundation videos. I seriously can't stop watching.

I've been looking for some nice new eyeshadow brush sets since all my brushes are falling apart (and pretty much every single one came with a palette save for one or two lol) and I ran across Spectrum Collections. I'm drooling over these gorgeous brushes, y'all, I'm such a sucker for colorful, rainbow-y things.

And this brush roll! Gah, it's so cute!

I'd buy the whole set (listed here) but frankly I'd never use the face brushes. I don't contour, I just use the sponge that comes with my pressed powder (which does get washed, btw) and I have two nearly-indestructible Youngblood brushes that I use for my setting powder, so I'd rather just get the eye brushes that I know I'll use, y'know?

I went to Ulta today just to kill some time and I'm so excited, they have Skin Food now! Not the full line, but still! I don't need any skincare stuff at the moment but I will soon and frankly I'm glad I won't have to order something and then wait a month for it to come from Korea...

Any recommendations for pale (NW15) mineral makeup that aren't Bare Minerals? I forgot how nice of a texture mineral makeup has. I bought a new one and the finish is amazing, but it's way too warm.

My current red lipstick is getting a little old so I recently bought a new one, it's the same as the one with the number 297 on it in the picture. It's super nice!
