Honestly wouldn't care about the period blood black magic if it wasn't for the feminists and SJWs constantly harping on about it. Hell, if the character's into hoodoo, then I'd kind of get it, except she's not trying to get a man to fall for her charms or anything of the sorts. Using it for shock value can only go so far if the show's not aiming to be a vulgar show like South Park and Panty & Stocking. And I'm unsure if sticking their fingers up the anus of a red panda is supposed to be guaranteeing them that.

Because the period blood joke is against a backdrop of really terrible Tumblr humor. I can forgive toilet humor when the rest of the show is actually funny. When the rest is just "lol weed and gamergate", the period blood joke just makes it night-and-day obvious they're trying way too fucking hard.

As others have said before me, there's a difference - Panty and Stocking was one big parody on raunchy and violent western animation using the vanilla magical girl 'fighting evil for love and justice' shtick - it's supposed to be over-the-top while still respecting the original product. I don't know if the art style took any inspiration from the PowerPuff Girls - another cartoon that dealt heavily in parody (cute, doe-eyed little girls with superpowers who are animated violently beating up bad guys) - because that's what the character designs remind me of, but that's what makes it work.

Same goes for South Park - they don't make poo-poo pee-pee jokes without going all-in autistically on the show. It's one thing to make a random coomer joke, it's a whole other ballpark when the show parodies The Grapes of Wrath where Stan and his family have to travel to California to find enough wi-fi for Randy to jerk off to fucked-up porn.

If they wanted to make a comedy ribbing the magical girl genre, they should've looked deeper than surface level tropes, identity politics 98% of the world doesn't know or care to know about, barely animated and unimaginative Tumblr/Cal Arts character designs, and Reddit-tier meme humor that'll be outdated in several years. Like there was a lot wrong with Steven Universe, but at least I can say from an artistic perspective that the team tried something different concept-wise instead of making the bad guy a literal caricature of Donald Trump made to look as Pepe and referencing a years-old online movement no one outside of the gaming world knows about.

God, these people are so creatively bankrupt, no wonder they have to leech off current events and other existing IPs to make anything - like vampires or parasites.
 
Having chipped away at the first two episodes of the show I've decided on a novel theory.

I think the writers aren't even trying to be mean-spirited. I think they legit, honestly have no idea what they are doing. Seriously. Every joke falls flat, every barb intended to piss me off misses the mark and it takes me a minute to go "Oh, was that aimed at me?". Sometimes they'll bring up something like the period blood and I'll be waiting around for the horrible punchline only to find, to my surprise, there is no punchline. Just mentioning something is supposed to be inherently funny, I guess.

I'm flashing back to a creative writing class I took in high school, and one guy I knew in that class was overwhelmingly better at math than anything literary. When it came time to review our final projects (short stories) he wrote this totally incoherent mess that I couldn't make sense of. When I asked him about it, he told me "I had no idea what to write, so I just picked things at random." I get that same vibe when I watch this show, like whoever is in charge of it doesn't even have an agenda they're trying to push. They're just mashing the keyboard and sweating while they try desperately to get a grip on pop culture. Its so weird and out of touch I almost pity it. Almost, though.

It'd be great if we could find out if the creator or anyone else has ever had their writings (fan fiction or otherwise) available online to check out to get a good feel of how their thoughts work. Yeah, poking fun of them for writing shitty stuff in their teens is low-hanging fruit, but you just know they kept writing fics into their 20s, and so they have to be floating around online somewhere.

Well I'll ask away on the creator's twitter sometime tomorrow, or be on the hunt for it.
 
This seems to have the same problems as the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters:

- lots of improvised humor that doesn't go anywhere and almost always falls flat
- the characters never shut the fuck up
- there are so many jokes and they fly at you so fast that even if some of them are funny, you don't get a chance to notice because they've already hit you with 2 more that aren't funny, there is no timing or room to breathe, just an avalanche of jokes
- every character is loud and obnoxious, there is no "straight men" (not in terms of sexuality but personality) who will offer some perspective (for example, Dragonball Z is full of crazy assholes but then you have Piccolo who, despite being an asexual alien monster, is very grounded in his behavior, he acts like a regular person would)
- there are no likable characters, all the protagonists are assholes
- almost everything is a reference to something better that came before

I don't think this is some SJW whatever, I think that the creators are really bad at this.
They wanted to make a Family Guy/Rick & Morty style anime parody and... well, they kind of did but that's not saying much.
