So is Aetherdrift just dead on arrival? I haven't really seen anyone talking about it despite it being the prerelease.
Why would it not be?
Vehicles are a failed mechanic, There are like 6 that are remotely playable (5 if we aren't counting the bullshit with Greasefang and Parhelion) and all of them (including the Greasefang Deck) are fucking miserable to actually play against.
The Set's concept is more retarded than Murders are Karlov Manor and Thunder Junction combined.
and there are no chase cards. No decent Land Cycle, no Powerful Cycle of Rares no Good Planeswalkers (Saffron Olive tried the Aetherspark in the Content Creator Preview and it fucking sucked a dick). Like the only card in the entire set that does anything interesting is Loot and everyone fucking hates him for being a shitty baby yoda ripoff.
Unless Tarkir is 11/10 I think Aetherdrift might actually kill Magic as an independent IP. Like we will get the rest of the already planned sets but I wouldn't be surprised if this year or next we get an announcement of a Full year of Universes Beyond standard sets. Like the Blind Eternity/Space set isn't gonna wow anyone I bet, especially because I imagine that is going to be the Climax of the Jace/Vraska/Loot arc and "Llorwyn 2" was announced as the last set of this year but got bumped for an Unnamed Universes Beyond set.
We got Return to Llorwyn and Return to Strixhaven as the 2026 sets, which means we aren't seeing a new plane* for over a year and a half (Duskmourne was the fall set in 2024, so at best the third set of 2026 will be a new place..but it hasn't been announced and we have 2 Magic IP sets opening the year...we are getting Universes beyond for the second half of 2026 I bet)
*The Blind Eternities isn't a Plane, I am willing to bet that set is going to take place on multipule planes akin to Aetherdrift, we might get a "new" place but I doubt it will get any sort of real focus.
