I still hate how they did this couple dirty in the third Ravnica visit. The only reason that WOTC is trying to retcon that couple breaking up is because the fans that cared about the story were pissed at what went down. Jace and Vraska's dynamic in Ixalan was one of the few good points of that story.
I would say most of Ixalan was good to the point where it is the best story line in the years after Origins did the soft reboot, my only real complaint is that Ugin never really got called out for his part of the Immortal Sun plan.
Allison Luhrs is one of the few competent writers at wizards. She wrote the whole of Ixalan/rivals, and is always brought back whenever Vraska and Jace are the subject of the story. A lot of the set stories are written by multiple artists which makes it hard to get into them.
Oh the actual writing in the Jace/Vraska bits are usually quite nice, even the outlaws of Thunder junction bit.

Gix being a Preator is a retcon, he was never mentioned as having that title whatsoever. Neither did Tsabo Tsavoc, Crovax or Volrath. The entire concept of a Phyrexian Preator didn't exist in lore until New Phyrexia when it became the word they used for the 5 rulers of the Mirrodin Biomes.

while it's a cocksucking faggot program, MTGArena is free (in the bare minimum sense) and teaches you how to play, and you can play endless practice games with the basic bot. That's the best thing that's out there to teach you how to play beyond picking someone on youtube that you find understandable, or being taught irl by someone who knows the game.

Before Crovax and Volrath there was a guy named Davvol who was very weak and mostly known for his ability to service things, but he played a big part in the Bloodlines books and was appointed by a never depicted Phyrexian known as Croag. Davvol shows up on several cards and that black thing on his head is because his people are born with soft heads that never stop being soft, so the Phyrexian grafted a metal plate onto his head to make him stronger.
