That is quite an exaggeration. Sarah is upset when a Congressman gets whacked who (in Mafia's world) was instrumental in passing suffrage. It's not played like some gay virtue signaling thing like the suffragette missions in RDR2 (kill me), it's played more like her being forced to confront, if for a moment, that her people's lifestyle not only kills, not only kills nameless mooks or unfortunates, but might actually make the world worse. I think it was a very smart scene.

I appreciate him being Vito's childhood friend and all, there's just nothing about him as the audience that I find endearing.

I just finished Mafia 3 after snagging the Definitive Edition Trilogy a little while back. I liked it better than I thought I would, given its reputation.

I don't have anything to add re:shitty open world design, that criticism is pretty on point. For the story, barring that DLC with Sinclair Parish, I thought it was pretty well done. The Civil Rights/Black Power was mostly background noise as part of the period piece. I enjoyed most of the characters. John Donovan especially was fantastic, and I'd love a game about him tracking down the rest of JFK's killers.

My big sticking point is that it's just an odd premise for a Mafia game. Not playing as a member of the Mafia is a hard sell in a series about exactly that. I think it could have helped this game's reception to have it as a spin-off or unrelated series in the same universe. But I suppose it wouldn't have sold as much without the recognizable brand name. Fuck AAA corpos.

Also, the game crashed right after the credits started, for like the twentieth time in my playthrough. Probably the most crashes I've dealt with in a AAA console game in ages.

I DID miss the part where you elaborated your claim. She appears in what, a few cutscenes at that? IMO, I found Paulie to be obnoxious. His Mickey Mouse voice and schemes is tedious.

In the base game of Mafia 2 he isn't portrayed very well. He is sort of charming in that Mafia way, but he is pretty much the direct cause of every last nickle of suffering Vito endures and the game makes that very obvious. He is the one who gets Vito arrested and sent to war, he is the one who gets Vito involved in drugs, and he is the one who pisses off the triads by killing their boss. He also heavily considered wacking Vito at the end of the game.

The game makes it pretty clear he is awful and even right at the end it looks like Vito kind of accepts that Joe getting wacked is something that needs to happen.

Then the DLC happens and he is a parody of himself and 3 makes it seem like Vito pretty much wanted to slob the guy's knob.

They turned her from a normal female character with a normal personality given the time period into a 21st century ideal of a stunning and brave queen. Gave her the Mario movie Peach treatment. There isn't even any relevant explanation in the story for why she became a boss bitch, she just is because fuck you, wamyn were always stronk.
I do appreciate that she is given more screentime at least, she's a very important character and even in the old game she was a strong influence on Tom's behavior and motivations. Precisely for that reason she didn't need to become this stronkwoman caricature in the first place. We just didn't see into their relationship very much which was a shame.

Now, she isn't the only character that was made worse in the remake. New Paulie is a psycho cunt, which isn't entirely out of character for him given his troubled nature, but his charming friendly side, which was very prominent in the old game, is hardly to be seen in the remake. He's just a callous prick most of the time. In the old game, 95% of the time you'd be interacting with a 'good' Paulie, and you'd mostly be hearing about the 'bad' Paulie from bits of Tom's narration or dialogue with other characters. Only in a very select few scenes would you see Paulie acting cruel, which is supposed to create this conflict of perception about his character. I always thought that was an example of really good writing. He's a character whom you really want to like, but as the story progresses it gives you more and more reasons not to.

In fact I could give this criticism to many characters in the remake. The old game relied a lot more on dialogue to convey details about the characters' personalities and behavior, which left you to draw your own conclusions on a lot of things. That's exactly how things work in real life too, you can't just switch to another person's POV to see everything they're doing and thinking. As a result the entire cast, or at least the more prominent story characters, felt very human and with depth. The remake doesn't really give a fuck, it just shows you everything and leaves few questions unanswered. Which becomes a larger problem because it isn't very consistent.

Yeah I love this game if you couldn't tell. <3 Now I wanna replay it.

Yeah but old Paulie had this exact same backstory going on. There were dialogues with Frank and Sarah who said this about him, even some scenes with Paulie himself complaining about how empty his life is and how tired he is of his existence being centered around the mob family. I'm glad this isn't lost in the remake because it's the centerpiece of his character but it's all that's really left of him, which is a waste. His resulting behavior is totally different, one-dimensional and generally shitty.

I felt pity towards him in the original because I liked him but knew he was a deeply troubled man. In the remake I still know that's the case but he's such a cunt I want to punch him.

You can watch all the cutscenes as a sort of movie. You'll be missing out on some ingame dialogue that takes place while driving or walking during missions, but it should give you a decent picture of the differences.

The English dub in the original kinda sucks but what can ya do.
