It's hilarious because behind the scenes Matthew Weiner was sexually harassing practically every actresses. And even fired one of the female writers after he tried to casting couch her, despite already working for the show, and she turned him down out of disgust. He was so obsessed with Jessica Pare (Megan) that he wrote her into being one of the main characters and had her running around in bikinis or lingerie every other scene and creeping all over her during shoots.

If you listen to the commentaries on the Blu Rays he's openly fantasizing about the actresses. But the biggest creep factor was him casting his son (who acted and looked like a serial killer) and putting him in scenes with half naked adult actresses. Then bringing his son back on the show and trying to push him onto the audience like some young hip sex symbol.

Ironically, Jessica Pare says anyone who isn't a feminist is a fascist.
 
Mad Men has tons of great scenes, and not just the more meme worthy ones. Jon Hamm and John Slattery were excellent.
 
I think the only thing about Roger that sus'd me out was in the last season
when he's at the hippie commune with his daughter and I don't remember if he participated in the free lovemaking or not but I would not be having any sense of sex around my daughter, but also I get that he's kept the two lives distinct in his mind
 
I don't like how Joan turned out. Supposed to be sympathetic to her and be amazed how she's a girl boss when in reality she was just a whore who happily enjoyed being a whore.
 
I remember watching it as it released and thinking it was fantastic. Until in later seasons it rather disappeared up its own backside apparently believing it was being deeply meaningful with the focus on "who is Don Draper" at the expense of the show as a whole. Don Draper was a fascinating character played by Jon Hamm with the charisma cranked up to 11 but it was the wider set of characters, the individual episode stories woven into the overall arc and, that fantastic period aesthetic (also with great use of music) that made the show.

And for the Joan (Chistina Hendricks) detractors.... Sure, she was never some stick insect and later seasons did her (amongst others) dirty but in those early seasons she was nothing short of magnificent. I didn't know what the word sashay truly meant until those shots of her making walking down a corridor into a quasi-religious experience.

I think everyone was mainly complaining about later-seasons Joan. I agree, she was perfectly good at the start as the bitch-queen of Sterling-Cooper.

As for Don, I just disagree. "Who is Don Draper" is an interesting question to ponder. He isn't a good man but he is a great man, and the show's exploration of the difference between these two mutually exclusive things a man can be is thematically strong enough to carry the later seasons imho. The only thing that really gets tedious later is the show trying really hard to emphasize how actually super not-sexist it is.
 
It’s interesting that Don Draper could’ve gone an entirely different direction had he gone with Fay instead of Megan. I did enjoy this retrospective series that went episode by episode on Substack (even if the guy is a libtard)


A key quote stuck out to me:

Don has always turned to sex as an answer to his emptiness. What shatters him to realize all these years later is that he never experienced true emptiness. He did not know what it was like for his very understanding of life to be ripped away from him.

That void in him only existed because he refused to fill it. It couldn’t be empty because it was never full. With Betty dying, Don feels his heart ripped from his body. An uncertain future has been made certain for once. In this certainty, there is horror and dread.

He depends upon Sally, more mature than both of her parents, to comfort both of them. The future is in good hands with Sally Draper leading her generation. Still, Don finds no peace.
 
Betty Draper -as much as I like her- would have never pulled off that move and saved that account. Of all the chicks he's been with, she was the one who was more of a partner-in-crime than anyone else.

Betty was just a good housewife married with the wrong guy.


I mean, even Joan said it as much. "The only sin she's commited is being familiar."


Also, notice how Don never tried to hook up with Joan. Game recognizes game.

None of the women really rise above being whores, or very promiscuous, or entirely forgiving of affairs on the show. Peggy sleeps with several coworkers including married ones. Megan lets Don sleep with her friend to try to save the marriage. Joan whores herself out for Jaguar. Roger's daughter joins a sex cult. Many of Don's conquests are married women cheating on their husbands. Trudy lets Pete cheat constantly and at one point he almost has her whore herself out to get him new business at work.

You could always tell when a new female character was introduced that she would probably have sex with the male character who was opposite her in the scene. Like the various women with Don or Roger show up and their first on screen action is to just stare at Don and drool. Or even Pete's random hookups (or rapes with his neighbor). It was never more than a few scenes before they'd be in bed (but never nude because it's AMC).

Joan's character whores herself out for seven seasons. Then magically lands a mega producer job and her own business in the last episode. It was just fan service for the audience to give her a good ending. Almost like a fantasy ending. People hated Betty's ending of dying of cancer and leaving her young children behind but it was far more realistic and played into the beginning of the show with all of the smoking and tobacco advertising. That felt earned. Joan's ending is unearned.
