That seems logical, but then that opens up the requirement for St. Anne and everyone else in Mary's line being born without original sin, and strongly implies that Mary didn't need a savior. I'm pretty sure the official reason for that being the case within the Roman Catholic Church is just that it was a gift bestowed to her by virtue of the fact she'd be the Mother of God rather then there being some ontological obligation for it.

You'd accurately observe that this, if correct, would contradict scripture, as Mary's Magnificat is about her being saved by God. The difference between Mary and normal people is that God saves people from the house fire of original sin, while Mary was saved by being kept out of the building in the first place.
