The "Down syndrome people are so happy!" narrative is complete shit. Downies are FUCKED, they experience extremely high rates of mental illnesses including basically a 20% chance of being seriously depressed, 50% chance of having OCD or a similar condition, something like 15% of them are autistic, they have higher rates of ADHD, etc etc ad nauseum.
The "Downies are so happy!" line comes from a massive propaganda campaign that was run in the 90s (in the UK anyway) to persuade people not to terminate pregnancies once a Down syndrome diagnosis was confirmed. I have no idea who funded it, but I can remember ads of cute blonde Downie 5-year-old girls with pigtails smiling in the sunshine everywhere. None of the ads featured fat, angry 30 year old Downies with psychosis, chronic heart disease and retard strength being wrangled by their broken, worn down parents.
