I went from Torchlight 1, to 2, to Diablo 3 myself. Despite the hate D3 gets, for a novice ARPG player who didn't grow up with D2, it's great. If you can get it relatively cheap, it's a no-brainer ($20 for the base + Reaper of Souls which is just straight up required for D3. Skip the Necromancer DLC, at least to start, it's mediocre imo.) . I've sunk around 3,000 hours into it.
Outside of that, Grim Dawn is fantastic, although I'm not a fan of stories in ARPG's that require decision making that drastically effect you in the long run. I had to tab out of GD too many times to know what this or that meant, and which decision to make that'll effect my character in the end game.
Path of Exile of course, but it's a bit complex, especially if you're new. But there's fun to be had without a doubt. Allot of it. Beware though, it's a freemium game.
Median XL if you want a more traditional ARPG experience, and really want to play Diablo 2.
Those are just a few though, and good entry points. One thing to keep in mind too, is that you're probably bound to end up playing one game way more than any other. ARPG games like these are hard to split up time between. And so you'll become bias towards certain game mechanics. I can play other games but my mind always ends up coming back to how D3 or PoE does x better than it's done in this other game. Not a bad thing though, it's just not a genre where you can sample something and get a feel for it then move on. They are time sinks after all.
