I really do not know where else to post this...
I have been using YouTube with youtube-dl/yt-dlp to retrieve and download video game soundtracks since forever, and the fact that you can never find video game music in its original form bothers me. From my personal experience, whenever I try to find music from games that are not the most well-known on the planet gives me either a 30-minute loop of each song, or a 10kHz recording that was uploaded to YouTube 17 years ago. All I want are songs that are the original quality from the game and only play once. Also, YouTube has been actively trying to block yt-dlp users for years now, so now my speed looks like this:

Please recommend a site with a comprehensive list of video game soundtracks available for download in the form of audio formats supported by most audio players (mp3, m4a, ogg, wav, etc.). not proprietary audio formats for use only by the game system. I understand I can download ROMs online then rip and convert the songs myself, but downloading the audio directly will be less cumbersome.
Sorry if this post comes off as too autistic and/or disjointed.
 
i think if you go into the vidya game files themselves you can just download em from there

KHInsider has full rips for almost every game you'd ever need. They also host the soundtracks for a lot of fan works and mods. Even stuff like supplementary CDs related to certain games (such as preorder bonuses) is included. The only downside is that there is a pseudo-rate limit; you can only download songs one at a time manually without an account, and to download full albums at once you need to make an account and get someone to click the referral link. I usually just make a burner account, click the referral link a few times using a VPN, and then I'm able to download any album I need. It's a godsend.

Only thing I hate about KHinsider is that some time ago they started removing items from their catalogue, including the entirety of Dancemania albums, along with some random choices like the Virtua Fighter and Sonic The Hedgehog series.

Those Dancemania albums in particular are rare finds and unless you actually pay for them (which, imports, so you're spending quite a bunch) you can't get them any other way. archive.org has a few of them, but of course they are of the nonstop megamixes and not the deluxe full version ones, which are the ones I'm more interested in.

And I know that others strongly dislike YouTube, but they are absolutely amazing when it comes to finding video game music. Other than Nintendo in recent years, however….(many fire emblem songs were simply yanked without explanation and that’s among the first times I’ve ever heard of a company doing that)

YouTube's compression is, has been, and always will be, complete dogshit. While the audio (for the most part, depending on the uploader) will still be 44.1/48 Hz, it will have that digital garble sound thanks to the added compression. It's why it's always recommended to get a CLEAN file of the song via cd rips or even digital storefronts like 7digital/junodownload.

Personally, Zophar's Domain is my first stop most of the time because they have actual gamerips so the songs are as clean as you can get.
Most of the time you can download both a convenient format like MP3 or WAV and the original formats like SPC or VGM.

Foobar2000 is a media player with a ton of modules (plugins) and a lot of them are for playing original formats.

VGMusic was one of my first places I ever got into video game music back in 2002-ish. I think I "graduated" into emulated music tracks (SPC, NSF, etc.) a few years later though that didn't allow for PlayStation or N64 tracks, not for the computer I had at the time.

By the way, if you're looking for something prior to 2000 (and a console game) Zophar's Domain is the best.
 
Since we are on the topic of downloading game soundtracks: I have been trying to download Homeworld: Mobile sountrack off of jewtube, since it's the only site I was able to find it in full and i can't exactly download it as an mp3 file - yt-dlp options exclude mp3 format (or simply don't work for mp3) and i'm too much of a nigger to write a working PowerShell command line to download it as mp3. And converting the entire soundtrack from mp4 to mp3 is a pain in the ass. Anyone knows of a better sollution, have the command line/script for downloading it as mp3?
