Once its set up, Linux is very casual compute friendly. Browsers work fine, and that's 90% of the casual traffic right there.
Honestly, linux use is a lot like the bell chart of intelligence memes. On the far ends, you've just got "Install a common distro that's rated for your hardware, and leave it alone" and it'll work just fine for normal users. In the middle, you've got the midwits who fancy themselves power users but don't have the technical skill to back it up, pulling random shit into their environment and changing core settings and files on the basis of a reddit thread they found in 2015 that totally gives "big better performance saar", who don't read anything the terminal throws back at them and never bother researching the consequences of half of what they do. These people end up with frankenbuilds that perform awfully, then cry and complain that Linux is just awful and doesn't work at all.
Tinkering with an OS can be great, but you've gotta back it up with technical knowhow, not just a cludge of copy paste.
I think this series will come to the same conclusion as the last one (with maybe the added effect of Elija trooning out).
I'm just confused by "Mr. Trch Tips" going for obviously bad advice written by AI and AI that just sources said bad advice. I trule believe he still thinks Fedora is a meme distro, which is a shame. Fedora and MX have been my workhorses for nearly a decade now with very few problems.
He then always deflects with his "I'm trying to represent the avg Joe", but I really don't think he knows how the average user acts. Most people who would even dare to install Linux (from his user base that is) would google something and add "reddit" at the end.
linux distros come working OOTB so you can start straight away, but that doesn't mean all hardware acceleration, drivers, tweaks and other things come configured by default.
Windows doesn't come "working" ootb if you think having to manually install drivers disqualifies it from "working". The only difference is that Windows will detect your hardware on first login and install drivers accordingly, usually shitty ones that you will replace with proper drivers down the road.

Flatpaks have age ratings and can tell you exactly what they can and cant touch, if something is shady the appstore will tell you, its just that something running in X11/Xwayland is "shady" because of scare theater that every application is technically a keylogger.
Having a sandbox helps. I wouldn't go tinkering on my daily driver unless I had a Linux distro running in a VM, but that's still not quite the same as having actual hardware to play with. Given that thousands of old but perfectly good Linux-ready PCs are thrown out every day, it shouldn't be too hard to source one's own hardware Linux playground for $0.

I installed bazzite on my Legion GO since steam OS is not available and windows 11 is shit. Too bad the troons that run it kicked the guy who made the drivers for the controllers out of the project because transphobia I might switch to steamOS since that sort of maybe could work now.

You can see GNOME Software classifies it equal to a bunch of other stuff, but Bazaar elevates it it as 'high risk' and displays a scary warning box when you install it. KDE Discover just simply lists the permissions, but doesn't seem to classify them or even mention X11 for that matter.

That was wild. They have done other things too, like DDOS the aur multiple times, not maliciously, but because they cant write a function appstore. Even their method of keeping packages back a few weeks for "testing" is retarded, as though arch themselves aren't already testing packages to see if they work.
SteamOS might work? I've used it on a HTPC before, not sure about handheld compatibility with other handhelds though. CachyOS has a decent handheld iso that i didnt have problems with on a HTPC, so if you dont really care about immutable filesystems that is another option.

I have not seen it mentioned here yet, but a guy made 3D printable copies of LTT's seemingly obscenely priced magnetic cable mounts and surprisingly the final cost was about the same as the LTT ones. The majority of the cost was in the neodymium magnets, which he sourced from a local (Australian?) expensive supplier. The end cost could be significantly reduced by ordering directly from Chinese suppliers, but that has it's own issues. I would probably still print them myself as after having owned a 3D printer I rarely purchase small plastic clips and connectors like this when I can print as many as I need, when I need them.
Speaking of bugmen, Der8auer got royally scammed when ordering >20,000 EUR of copper and aluminium plates from Alibaba suppliers. It was rather shocking to see how far the Chinese went in their deception, as one supplier coated two pallet loads of steel plates in a thick layer of copper to fool basic tests and a completely separate supplier only filled a third of a crate with aluminium plates and the rest with steel bars.

I guess he is too used to Germany being a high-trust society compared to China where anything goes. Honestly he was asking to get scammed by not flying out in person for such a critical order.

My dad is using for 6 years now and he knows nothing about computers and doesn't want to learn anything about them besides reading emails, YouTube and eBay.
Linux based operating systems are great for people that just use browser for their stuff. Especially since the UI doesn't change a lot compare to windows and doesn't spy on you like chrome os and windows.

i used linux in the 90s and it was an unmitigated disaster. guess what, unless you run very specific hardware and very specific distributions for very specific usage scenarios, it's still an unmitigated disaster.

But i remember trash font rendering, drag and drop often not working correctly (something windows95 did better) updating a package breaking stuff. updating amd drivers breaking stuff. repository address changing and having to google for an hour to find where i can change it, when most dipsits just said "reinstall the newer distro".
I use octoprint for my dildo printer on an old pi 3 and it's nagging that the python release on it is EOL and i can only update it by nuking the install and reinstalling a newer release and if i export and reimport my settings it "should" work fine. Yeah ok blow me i'm just not gonna upgrade it fuck you
