Linus desperately wanted to look cool, so he swore a lot, threw his phone across the table, and he also manspreaded like an r-slur throughout the video (but I think that's unrelated). This all came off as fake. Maybe it's because I've heard him say these exact things in exactly the same manner before on WAN Show, but there's also a dissonance between what the channel actually is and the way Linus talks about it.

The bigger irony is that on top of his content being absolute slop, his business model probably killed off dozens of real magazines and newspapers and slopified the entire industry - which also includes indirectly killing off the entire enthusiast computing scene.
That doesn't mean he was some evil person who deliberately did that and someone else would've filled the void eventually but I'm certain the advertising spend on traditional media made literally zero sense when you could just pay LTT a hundred grand and get millions of viewers in the intended core demographic instantly.

Anyway that "scene" isn't 100% dead but it does make it much harder for genuine hobbyist ideas to get any traction or attention or advertiser/sponsor dollars, but the LTT-ification of tech reviews and computing reviews definitely had a profound mark on the entire media industry - this much is impossible to argue against given how prolific LTT was on YouTube's home page for the past decade or more.

I don't know if you guys saw it on the subreddit a few days ago, but this thread (archive) made me laugh. It's about one (1) line from the PC Gamer article on the Linus x Linus collab. The author deemed Linus' behavior to be cringy and attention-seeking. @KPO12-43 Again actually notes the same thing in his post about the video.

But according to OP, Linus isn't cringy, on drugs, or attention-seeking. He's retarded. And people should stop bullying him! The OP spergs out over that one line in the article. And somewhat ironically misspells the word ableist.

This article from PC Gamer really frustrated me. TWICE the author refers to Linus 'gurning'! Linus & LTT don't have to be everyone's cup of tea – Linus himself has acknowledged on WAN that some people just tuned out, and so be it – but such personal attacks are just unnecessary, and below the belt, from a supposedly established media outlet.

The author says: "cue endless gurning and puns [by Linus]" and then AGAIN later says "Unfortunately, Linus of the Tech Tips variety's attention-seeking gurning prevents the Linus we're actually interested in from explaining his choice."

Here in the UK anyway, gurning refers to someone who's exhibiting odd facial ticks, often specifically because they've been abusing certain powdery substances... I find this to be a totally unnecessary physical/personal attack on Linus, who is clearly just excited as any of us would be! He's also been very open about the fact that he's neurodivergent. As someone who's neurodivergent myself and has the odd unconscious tick, I find the author to be nothing short of albeist here.

What a shameful article aimed at Linus, in what was otherwise a lovely and wholesome video. It's sad that people, especially outlets that should know better, still somehow managed to find a way to hate.

Less funny but still maybe worth noting: More drama slop! A small channel with just 3.7k subscribers made a video on Linus. The video went semi-viral, gaining 75k views in two days.

The video was of course posted on /r/LinusTechTips (archive), where much sneeding ensued. Gamers Nexus is, as always, somehow to blame.



Despite all the hate, the like/dislike ratio is surprisingly good.

LTG clearly has a spending problem. They could massively scale back and still keep the "production values" they currently have. He'd disagree but it's obvious that you don't need a team of over a 100 people, all with expensive hardware and a fucking machine shop to do tech videos. I'd make sense to me if any of that capacity was properly used but it isn't. The machine shop could be used for more DIY projects but it barely gets used. The same for the LTT Labs, yeah it might make sense to automate data collection at a certain scale but do they do anywhere near enough data driven reviews for the cost of Labs to make sense?
