Lib Dems to include trans and non-binary people in period poverty debate: ‘Not just a women’s issue’

The Liberal Democrats are to include trans and non-binary people in a period poverty debate that aims to provide free menstruation products in England.

Ending Period Poverty, a policy motion submitted by a London branch of the party and the Young Liberals, will be debated at the Lib Dems’ autumn party conference in Bournemouth on 23 September.

Lib Dems leader Ed Davey will be among those to vote on the policy proposal that states: “Menstruation is not just a women’s issue, and also affects some trans and non-binary people.”

The party’s women’s and equalities spokeswoman, Christine Jardine, has backed the move, telling PinkNews: “Period products are a basic necessity, not a luxury. Nobody should experience period poverty, yet, thanks to the cost of living crisis, this is sadly becoming more common.

“Liberal Democrats will fight to ensure free period products for anyone who needs them in England. It’s the only way to end period poverty and bring us one step closer to equality.”

The move has predictably angered right-wing UK news outlets, with Talk TV pundit Alex Phillips calling it “non-scientific wokery” and claiming that only people with “blue hair” and “mental-health issues” are “actually bothered by this”.

Anti-trans campaigner Helen Joyce, also speaking on Talk TV, voiced her opposition to the scheme, calling the inclusion of trans and non-binary people “woke signalling”.

‘Period products are a human right’

The Lib Dem motion also highlights that the annual average cost of sanitary products is £120, according to the charity Bloody Good Period, which previously told PinkNews: “Period povertyin the UK is becoming an increasingly bigger issue, year on year.

“Period products should be freely available, and they should be accompanied by informative, shame-free, inclusive education, normalisation and practical support.”

The motion states that “Period products are a human right, not a luxury, nobody should experience period poverty. England’s current free period product provision is not fit for purpose [and] it is in everyone’s interests for the stigma around periods to be addressed.”

Among its aims, the proposed scheme calls on the government to introduce a right for people in England to access a choice of free period products, place a duty on local authorities and education providers to provide free products, and improve education on periods in a bid to reduce stigma.

Last year, Scotland became the first country in the world to make period products free to all people who need them – regardless of age, gender or income.

Following the landmark Period Products Act, campaigners have called on the UK government to follow Scotland’s example, especially having promised to end period poverty globally by 2030.

“Menstruation is not just a women’s issue, and also affects some trans and non-binary people.”
Of course the "some" in there is the weasel to allow them to say, when pressed for the 10th time, "I didn't actually mean free tampons for bio-men to shove up their asshole after an inadvisable excursion to the curry shop".

Trans women think tampons and periods are funny and only want to be "included" in the conversation because they freak the fuck out at any possible real woman only space that exists. Even one for an embarrassing biological function they don't have to deal with.

I suspect this is just about including women who call themselves men or "non-binary", but the Lib Dems unfortunately lack a word to describe this group of people. "People who menstruate," perhaps?

Interesting move.

I don't expect Ed Davey to do this, nor get the UK back into the EU, but he's winning over the disenchanted and disenfranchised Labour voters.

Despite 'Labour hitting 50%' in some polls, Starmer will not call for a VONC/General Election as he knows that the UK will reject his woke policies and also Rosie Duffield, Jeremy Corbyn etc. are going to hamper his Neoliberal campaign to get into Number 10.

Sunak is rudderless and splitting the Tories, and all of a sudden the upswing in the Lib Dems votes (remembering that they have won the most by-elections since the last GE) is a boon for Davey and if the Lib Dems can now become the official 'Re-join' party they will scupper Labour - maybe fatally.

At the same time, Reform UK are enjoying a boost to their polling numbers and a coalition of the Right (UKIP/Reform/Britain First/BNP/NF) could well be in the offing - either that or an agreement on only one Far Right party to run (most likely Reform UK) with the others agreeing not to challenge them at the Polls.

A snap GE is likely, and way overdue.

I was kinda onboard with the idea of making woman's sanitary products free until I saw them claim what women spend on it, I'm not a woman but even I can easily see how bullshit a claim of £120/yr for sanitary products is. On the first row of results for "tampons" on Tesco shows a pack of 20 for £1.05, you'd spend like £20 to get a year's supply.

No. Water is a human right. Period products aren't.
Human rights are whatever the status quo arbitrarily decides is human rights for that week that they can use to browbeat their opponents with.

Human rights are pointless if the establishment can just take them away and grant them on a whim depending on what is and isn't needed to advocate their current policies, its security theater for liberals.

The fact that they're claiming genital mutilation surgeries are a human right should have clued people into that fact.

Aren't there already a bunch of charities that give menstrual products for free anyways?

It’s a non issue. It’s a nice easy progressive issue to campaign in that doesn’t require you to face any real opposition or angry murdery mobs like you would if you campaigned to end circumcision or FGM.
But the Lib Dems are full on tranny lovers. Ed Davey said on air that women could have penises. They’re supportive of troons
Aimee challenor was aided and abetted by the Lib Dem’s.

They’re dreadful. I mean all the uk political parties are dreadful, but the Lib Dems are a disaster. Which is a shame because having a two party system sucks
