I've read a lot of short stories written by homos for homos from the 80s and 90s and you can really tell that the characters in these stories have way more depth than what is shown on TV today. You don't get a perfect uwu yaoi boy that you can safely self-insert as a woman, instead it's often very morally ambiguous or downright loathsome/bad fictional homos being portrayed.
