As other people have said, Chip was popular because his video editing and LPs in general were some of the cleanest we'd ever seen outside of the Research Indicates Trespasser LP (and RI does video editing professionally iirc). He'd re-record sections to get a clean interesting run, him and Ironicus had good chemistry and tended to stay focused on the game itself, gameplay was competent, and he tended to pick interesting games where you have a lot of material to work with, like MGS.

He's a good LPer. You can disagree with his politics but in 2008-2009, his stuff was some of the highest quality LPs on SA.

Edit: For the record, re-recording sections to get a clean, good run is something I never had any patience for (I'd prefer to just unprofessionally chop the shit out of the video to remove failed runs with star wipes or something), so serious props to anyone willing to play a stage a dozen times to get a good video. I unironically admire people willing to go that extra mile.

None of these people were ever actually, well... good people. They had good riffing skills years ago, but the core concept of Retsupurae has always been "LET'S TEACH THESE INTERNET PLEBS A LESSON for not practicing the Goon art of Talking Over Video Games correctly!" and a lot of it was aimed at complete nobodies, sometimes even at kids. Even back when they were funny, choosing to focus on something so petty was still extremely childish and a waste of comedic talents.

While we're still talking about old videos, here's a deleted Chip video of a guy with obvious mental issues. They did a series about a Sailor Moon fan project that looks like it was made by kids, with an interesting episode about Islam. Slowbeef has made a couple videos mocking women too, mostly on Webcam Ward. They've all done videos mocking kids. LesBeardly's channel in particular was mostly videos from kids who had barely any following. At least they realized pretty quickly that retsupuraeing kids' videos wasn't warranted, and eventually stopped. You could argue that they have learned from their mistakes in most of these situations. Maybe they just overcorrected.

Didn't remember a bunch of that stuff but at least he deleted the one mocking a literally retarded person. Meanwhile he still has the Serious Sam video up where the LPer's son appeared onscreen and he made up a story about the kid having a molesty pedophile uncle. This was around the time when he was crying about Pewdiepie being a rape culturist for saying he's getting "raped" in a game when getting his ass kicked really bad. I pointed out to him that him joking about the kid is a million times worse because it's directed not just at a person, but at a CHILD and, asked him how he'd feel if someone said that about his own son. Instant block.

I'm not sure what the video where they post a real photo of her and mock her for it was but honestly "PLEASE HAVE SEX WITH ME" right after the not-a-feminist accusation is worse.

If you're gonna dig up stuff from a few years back, what about the webcam ward video beef and diabetus did of Hannah Minx that was basically "SHUT UP AND SHOW US YER TITS" for 5 minutes? (Though to be fair, that's ANY person's reaction to watching one of her videos).

At any rate, I think the fact they stopped doing retsupuraes after people stared harassing the people who made the original videos support slowbeef's defence that the goal of retsupuraes was more to get a laugh at bad videos than trying to bully people off of youtube.
 
It's probably just the environment of the LP sub forum as it is today. Plenty of quality work to be found, despite it being a melting pot of SocJus chicanery. Though it's clear prolonged exposure will likely have negative effects on your work. Which is why you go from a stellar Rise of the Triad LP to a video of Drawful 2 with a moronic title like this:

I vaguely remember this, but I don't think it's necessarily fair to tie those two things together. Dude probably had major issues outside of someone making fun of his LPs.

Also (and there are no screenshots to show) but Slowbeef's apparently been working on his own visual novel game in RenPy (a framework for creating them).

He was apparently inspired by Doki Doki Literature Club and started work shortly after that game's release. Another inspiration is apparently the film "Cube."

He's talked about trying to learn the 3D modeling/rendering/animation package, Blender, so he can make backgrounds for the game (but apparently he was having issues with Blender crashing). I'm not sure how much progress he's made with his game, if any.

FYI you kind of need to be able to write to make a visual novel. Like the game aspect is super simple and usually handled by somehow else, or a program where you just slot art in. Maybe write like a short story or something first buddy.
