Let's Players originating from Something Awful - ft. VoidBurger, General Ironicus, Bob Kamoc

"Something that people don't realize is that video editing requires editing video."

Thanks void. Also we've proven time and time again that ugly people can take advantage of not showing their face to give the audience the impression they're attractive.

Voidburger is Sauron's attempt at making a horse.

On the bright side, Chip and Void are a total looksmatch. Soyboy manlet and tall ogre woman. Both awful people. Balance.
Also it's so fucking sad to remember the funny Chip who did the Peace Walker LP with SnarkCookie and know that he ended up going down this dark path.
Someone definitely put a curse on the SA goons.

That's why you play the game yourself. Record yourself playing, timestamp the parts you know you'll want to use for your video. You probably won't get them all and will still have to do some digging every now and then, but it should be easier to dig through your recent playthrough versus scouring to get the clips you need.

Unless you're just talking cutscenes in which case I'd argue that's easier than ever because pretty much every game has multiple playlists that are just "story of X game," many of which are literally each cutscene as a separate video so you don't even have to scroll through a 3 hour long video to get the one you're looking for. Again, it doesn't completely eliminate the need to search, but it definitely cuts down a significant amount of time.

But, hey, I'll actually agree with VB for once, she's right that her videos are better off when she doesn't physically appear in them and I'll gladly encourage her to keep taking whatever steps are necessary to avoid showing herself on camera.

Also, great job contextualizing all your work as “lol I just vibe and slap whatever footage together and just say what I think”

Super smart, especially when your one professional position doing that amounts to the totality of your experience

If I was looking at her CV she’d be several times more likely to be hired to clean toilets, she has far more professional rigor in that field

EDIT: Also, in the single universe where she did a video essay on a game only I ever posted footage of, I own all of her eggs in perpetuity. I fertilize them and shoot them into space to test effects of weightlessness on infant onryō

At the end of the day, Let's plays were just "that time when you were a kid playing a video game with your friend/brother/whatever but now it's a stranger or two on a video call".
Huh? That's not Let's Play. Neither of those are. Screenshot LPs, and his "invention" of video LPs, are narrations and commentary of games in a format meant to entertain. Which is a standard I fucking hate because before that, the standard was raw gameplay footage and that's what I wanted to see. But I guess it's still better than the faggots who were substituting their own music over the audio of the games.

Sure thing, Ethel.

Quite literally it's just trying to emulate the banter of playing with someone in the same room with you.

The poster on SA (who should be credited as the actual inspiration for LPs) specifically said they had missed the feeling of sitting around with a friend and chatting while playing a game with friend which is what Slowbeef replied to and recorded himself rambling over and why the format generally expanded to be two people talking (like Game Grumps, Best Friends Play, Markiplier and Friends, and so on.

Yeah it fairly quickly evolved into something different, turning into pure AIDS instantly, but, that's where the idea comes from.

I wonder if slowbeef ever dipped his toe into any other fan projects, even under an assumed name. Credit where credit's due; he did help (on the technical side) get the PS1 version of Policenauts translated, and even made a pretty good LP of it, in line with his previous work on Snatcher (regular and SD). If not, well...

He'll always have PAX Boston, 2012.

(Yes, I know about the shitty video LP he did years later. Let me have my good memories.)

So this is the dude who invented let's play.
Fun fact: Slowbeef took over the Retsupurae subreddit as a mod and restricted it so no one can post without his say so, and it died as a result.
He's a shadow of his former self.
What went wrong?
That video popped up on my feed as well, and it reminded me of this thread. I first dismissed it as another one of those random schizo videos with less than 100 views the algorithm keeps pushing at you and then I did a genuine double take when I realized it was the inventor of the LP himself.

How do you even let it get THIS bad? He has 40k subs, but his channel has barely hit 200 views at all the last couple of months. It's very evident that no one is interested in his daily 30 minute session of screaming at the void about Juri's grippers.

For comparison, even an absolute C-list SA nobody like Kiwi Farms' favorite horse consistently hits five times more views than him, on a channel with half as many subs.

Please don't get me wrong, both of those channels have absolutely pathetic numbers for youtubers who've been at it for 20 fucking years. But imagine for a second having as much of an ego as Slowbeef does and getting viewmogged by this tranny's face.

It didn't "get" this bad, it was always this bad.

Let's Plays (and by extension all of Something Awful) existed in this really weird space in effort - you couldn't just do bad job (that would make you an asshole) and you couldn't try really hard to do a good job (because you're a weirdo try hard), so you'd get this kind of stuff. Not comically bad, but almost a sarcastic kind of "well, good enough" that you'd expect from asking a child to do a chore.

When LPs were new - this was good. Most early LPers were stuck trying to point a VHS Camera at a CRT television so people that could capture correctly and edit were considered really good at it. But, as everything does, the technology moved forward and SA's ironic "kind of OK" vibe just looked like shit. Instead of ever adapting or admitting they were wrong - they just coiled in on themselves and laughed at tryhards chasing fame and money - with this being the end result. Slowbeef blasting boring gameplay to sub 100 views.

Void is even worse because she had a pretty clear once-in-a-lifetime chance to build an audience via her pity hire at Giantbomb and couldn't even do that right. She'll never get a chance like that again and fairly sure she's aware of it.

The best part is that the two sources most younger gamers get game information from (streaming and social media) are both things she’s always sucked at

The only online gaming publications that will be around in 15 years will be the ones that let their writers use casual slurs

I guess maybe they're both just out of touch with what people want to actually see, and they're also just not very likable people at all. Slowbeef is a post-troll's remorse bore and Void has a naturally detestable aura. But yeah, one look at Slowbeef's thumbnails and I think to myself "does he want people to NOT watch these?!" lol.

The only ones whom I think could have escaped this SomethingAwful purgatory are ChipCheezum and Diabetus, but Betus only streams old games on Twitch and doesn't bother with Youtube at all, and Chip's output has always been very low, with huge gaps between series and episodes, and even I stopped watching Chip and unsubscribed when he and Ironicus started talking about how great socialism is during the MGSV LP. It was a farcry from the dude who did Peace Walker with that chick Snarkcookie. It's night and day. They've all lost their spark.

They're all unlikable now, or too political, or just not bothered with it beyond the occasional stream.
As for Slowbeef, he's a special kind of stupid, having built a fanbase of /v/ edgelords, which at the time was smart, but only to lose his spark, too, and go full libtard, to which now he has haters from all over, and he fills the void with trappings of game development and even fatherhood, which obviously isn't for him given the amount of time he spends on Youtube making videos for literally fucking no one.

He's terrified of backlash, too, the pussy. If you check the Retsupurae subreddit, he became a mod a few years back and set it to restricted, to control the narrative, so no one can post without him approving it, so no negativity is being made public.

It's the worst of all possible worlds for all of them. Hated, fallen into obscurity, or both somehow.

But given those thumbnails, I think Beef may actually have gone insane. I follow a fair few genuinely insane people on Youtube and he's given those vibes lately. I'll watch a few vids and report back if he does anything retarded!

*edit: I still love Diabetus. He always seemed nice

Beef pretty clearly only cares about what he thinks and isn't going to change for anyone.

Void is just lazily chasing trends and wants to be the typical "girl streamer who gets effortlessly showered in money and attention" without wanting to do any kind of work to get there (and could not even leverage the work Giantbomb did for her, for free).

Content Creation is about networking socially - but they both just want so sit there and wait for someone to come do the work for them.

Yup. That was clinched for me earlier when I actually watched his "lab" video. The dude titles these videos with this esoteric style that makes the average person not have a fucking clue what it is. Turns out it's a 50-or-so minute video of Beef boringly dicking around with a Street Fighter game, learning it or something, with no energy at all. The thumbnail is ass and he's going for the mad genius vibe.

Gaaaaaaaaaay.

They always looked down on everyone.
Pewdiepie was a target of theirs, and now he's world famous. So instead of branching out, they just made a hugbox of loud and unlikable people like TieTuesday (though he was all right in Deep Freeze), Voidburger, etc. And sure, they were friends with Rooster Teeth, but only ever got a few panels out of it. That was their moment to capitalise, but they didn't take it and soft-quit the channel instead because of troll's remorse.

Shitty thing is, their Sonic 06 wrongpurae was some of their best stuff, and videos of that nature, just playing shit games, was a great way to move into something new. The Kickstarter about the MMORPG was one of their best ever ("and I'm dennis" *lightningbolt*), and the old Webcam Ward stuff where they reacted to a very early E3 stream (one million twoobs) was great.

What's weird is Beef still making almost-daily videos and dedicating so much time to this, despite being a father, meaning we can't say "well, real-life stuff got in the way". He's languishing for literally two-view status, and still holding on to that eceleb dream, but without Betus he's just not entertaining. Betus was silently the MVP of the duo.

Slowbeef even shittalked Vinny Vinesauce once, saying his corruptions were inauthentic and he was hamming it up.
Even in Retsupurae's final update video about being a dead channel, some in the comments laugh at them for turning into pussies, but I think it's all a Slowbeef thing and Betus was just along for the ride.

The shitty thing, though, was keeping the audience in the dark for so long, only to drop an update nearly a decade later to say yeah we're done for good.
As always, archive everything. Eventually Beef will almost certainly delete it.

ValkyrieAurora literally just did that with her Youtube channel, and she had 230k subscribers.
Beef already restricted the subreddit. If he reads the comments in his update video, he might just nuke it for good.

I'll defend Beef solely on the grounds that he has a job and he does things and has a family. I just think he likes streaming, but I don't think he's trying to make a career out of it. I could be wrong but if he is just recording some stupid shit and posting it to YouTube and not getting many views, then I don't think that really makes him any more laughable on its own than like 90% of YouTube.

I've never really considered slowbeef a lolcow. He's just like most other people on SA (and Twitter, and Facebook, and...) who eventually decided that humor couldn't have any edge whatsoever. I don't personally agree with that take but I also can't be pissed at everyone who does.

That defense works for Beetus but not Beef. Beetus seems content in his new niche and just quietly turns out his content for people who watch.

Beef very clearly aspires to greatness as he continually shills himself as "inventor of the LP". he's just got enough self awareness to not spiral into complete cringelordism chasing a dream he knows is impossible. Anytime he talks about anything that isn't the game on screen, you can feel the impotent rage seep out. "I invented the LP! Where is my gamer supps partner link? Where are the barely legal e-thots sliding into my DMs?"

<insert allegory about other goons trooning out in pursuit the impossible dream of being women here>

Unless you're one of the funniest people on earth, or a top 10 player, nobody wants to watch somebody lab. It's the most boring part of fighting games despite being important.

If Slowbeef is using it just as a personal archive so he can go back and check what he previously labbed, fair enough. But if he actually wants views from his Street Fighter stuff he should do something like challenging DSP to a match.
