Even feudal lords weren't the dark lords commies think they were. If they pissed off their serfs, Knights, and other underlings they'd have an uprising on their hands. Uprisings were much more likely in the Medieval Era because people didn't have bread and circuses, and there was no surveillance-police state. It's the same reason why the American colonists rebelled against the Empire when King George is benevolent in comparison in to our rulers.

It has nothing to do with maintenance or any work the landlords do or don't do; and purely about "you should let us live here for free".

There were very few professional soldiers, and your male peasants were most of your actual fighting forces. Peasant uprisings had to be fought against with someone else's soldiers. Which, if things went south fast enough, will not actually make it to help the lord in question.

Also they were effective just... not necessarily always for the peasants actually fighting. If all negotiations fail and then your peasants got mowed down by better lead better equipped forces you look like an asshole to your liege and he has to bail you out because OOPS you killed your fiefs source of income.

Back in early 15 century there were Hussite wars .
Hussites were ProtoProtestants who revolted against catholic Church after their leader Jan Hus was burned as heretic.
Most of their armies were peasants using modified everyday farming tools as weapons..
They were really successful they took control of most of Bohemia and defeated multiple armies lead by Holy Roman Emperor And 5 crusades.
Hussite wars ended with Pope allowing freedom of religion in Bohemia as long as you were either Catholic or Kališník.


If peasants revolt and you crush them what you achieved?
You killed part of your workforce, taxpayers and Army.
In middle ages knights were only small part of army, most of army were peasant levies.
