I'm curious, @x86x2 , what exactly is your impairment that required you to have a handler? My mother is friends with a woman whose daughter was pretty severely mentally disabled on top of being physically deformed, and she had a handler, but that was because mentally, she was on par with a seven year old at best. Still is, as far as I know. Her movement was slow enough that on family outings, she would frequently have to be pushed around in a stroller.

According to you she'd be a Barneyfag, but I much prefer her company than I would yours. For the severity of her impairment, she gets such tremendous joy out of the smallest things. There's not a mean bone in her body. Hell, we grew up together.

I mean, her handler was there to make sure she wouldn't feel left out in a lot of her classes, and to guide her through the day. You say yours were there to "give you confidence," but I don't really buy that. If that were the case, where was my handler to hold my hand and give me confidence in my work? Hell, most of my friends would have needed handlers due to just being awkward nerds.

Do you have an actual diagnosis? Is it a learning disorder or developmental? Is it actually just straight-up autism?

He was of at least average intelligence, but he was so severely socially awkward and anxious due to his autism that he needed someone there to keep him from feeling overwhelmed. Even with her help he still had outbursts. I imagine this is what Barneyfag means by "confidence."

The thing is, I felt bad for that kid. I still do. I don't feel bad at all for Barneyfag.
