I made this thread so you can suggest laptops for me and other users to buy. I want one that has enough RAM to handle 100s of pages. I want it to be 15 inches or bigger, and I want it to have good text rendering so old HTML sites look good. Unlike on my current cheap laptop, I would also prefer a barrel charger, as it seems to last longer than USB-C chargers. Feel free to suggest options in this thread. Also, no, I'm not getting a gaming PC. Shut up, PC "master race."

ThinkPad T580. Only thing it doesn't have is a barrel jack, but I believe you can upgrade the RAM to 64GB. They're going for only a few hundred bucks nowadays, and you can even install Windows 11 since they have 8th gen Intel CPUs.

This thread gets made every few months. The answer is a Macbook. Air if you want it to be economical and are happy using Safari, Pro if you want more power and don't mind the extra weight which you clearly don't since you want a +15" display. I don't know what 'handle hundreds of pages' means, but it will be able to handle it.

Inb4 muh closed garden, be honest with yourself, you aren't going to be impacted by those restrictions.

Apple is for fags.

The problem is Windows 11 sucks so you’re going to have to look for ether a MacBook as CryoRevival suggests or look for something you can actually upgrade and runs Linux natively like System76 or Framework.

I’ve used Dell, Toshiba, Razor, and Sony laptops in the past and all have been pretty meh. Razor was the best of the bunch but it still had its problems.

Panasonic CF 54 tough book. Depending where it comes from you might also get but not limited to
  1. rfid chip reader
  2. thumb print reader
  3. open PCI slot and or integrated shitty graphics card on 3rd gen (Radeon R9 m200x)
  4. Integrated GPS
  5. open 4g / 5g sim car slots
  6. hot swappable SSDs / batteries / disc drive slot
  7. A touch screen that only seems to work when im drunk
  8. you can use it as a hammer
all $350 ish - $450

2nding a Panasonic toughbook, got a really good deal on a modern one - CF33- with a detachable keyboard, touchscreen (I think older ones are the resistive ones that only work with gloves, mine works fine without hard presses), ports galore, and a SIM slot for only $100 on ex LEO liquidation sale, but it only has 16g soldered ram.

I can strongly recommend the W540/541, it has been my main computer for the last 9 years and I don't see myself swapping off any time soon. While you are capped at SATA III speeds, you can get up to 32 gigs of ram and like 4 SSDs in there if you like bulk storage. For better specs I can recommend the P16 Gen 1, got one from work and it is a joy to use.

If you don't mind buying used, keep an eye out for decent used deals everywhere (ebay/facebook/police auctions). Every so often a really good deal comes up. I got an 8th gen i7, 32GB DDR4 ram and Quadro P3200 card for 200, also has a barrel jack charger.

Avoid HP, whenever my great uncle has laptop issues it's always with his retarded HP laptops.

Anything that Libreboot supports, personally I prefer Thinkpad Ivy Bridge xx3x (T530, T430, X230, etc.), or if you're fine with only USB2 and Sandy Bridge, Thinkpad xx2x (T420,T520, X220 etc.), the benefit of the older Sandy Bridge models is they still have the old style keyboard if you prefer that. Get integrated graphics if you don't need dGPU, battery life is much better. Also get the dock (or several), they're great, more than worth it.

Get a Windows 8 tablet. Those are peak computer and are selling for super cheap right now, and you can install Linux on them if they get too slow.
