As general rule, it's a bad idea for a defendant to testify in just about any trial.

The only legitimate reason I see for doing this is a worry about a tainted jury. Kyle, from a visual and personality standpoint, is a kicked puppy and it could sway a good chunk of the jury if they are on the fence to leap over to his side.
