Regardless of the method; any form of interpolation or smart resize, or whatever method to "increase the fidelity" of an image you might use: It's still inserting data that wasnt there to begin with, based on what are effectively estimations. I'm sure we're in agreement that these images shouldn't be used in this case.

I disagree because the square pixels of the display are also artifact-producing. There is a reasonable argument to be made that displaying a blown-up video with bicubic interpolation is no more disingenuous than displaying a small image on a TV, and is certainly better than nearest-neighbor for real-life video content.
