"Hardcore Christians"? You mean they believe in Jesus and the Bible and not Kurt's weak-ass kinda-sorta not-really-important-to-me christianity? I think the deep study of the Bible for decades is the best part. Kikenwald ain't really doing that.

Doesn't matter, never happened. The preacher never quoted Reader's Digest, he was never invited anywhere by anyone. This has all the hallmarks of another Kurt Eichenwald Tall Tale.

I got roped in to going to one of hose churches recently. They spoutedprosperity gospel and we’re quite willing to misquote several different translations of the Bible to suit their message.

I doubt the preacher was dumb enough to plagiarize readers digest though. Or that is Kurt even knows even enough Greek to claim to be a biblical scholar, much less any training in the subject

I seriously doubt he can identify individual version of the Bible from a short quote, except possibly the KJV which is pretty distinctive. But hey, maybe he had a magical seizure that gave him super Bible powers.

I’ll hive him the benefit of the doubt on that one. The scummy church I visited had the balls to cite each translation individually.
 
Here's a more likely situation:

Kurt is invited to church, the pastor includes a anecdote from Readers Digest as an attention getter, and relates the story to a passage on the bible. The pastor could go over the differences between King James International and New International as the versions do have some discrepancies in translation and the pastor would want to clarify for the congregation. As far as not knowing old and new testament, pastors typically go to seminary for 5 years to obtain a masters in divinity, so it's very doubtful they'd mess up the half of the bible that a passage was located in.

Kurt is a massive liar.

Nothing in that story adds up.

I have a personal theory about lying. The brain's sense of truth is like a ratchet; things that are true to one's memory get through, others encounter resistance. If you pull against the ratchet, it weakens. The successful liar must first convince herself that she does not lie, and this weakens the ratchet with every pull. Eventually it doesn't work at all, and the chronic liar can no longer separate plausible reality from fantasy. This makes their lies more inept over time.

That he called the preacher out, threw the exact issue of Reader's Digest onto the altar and walked out as the whole congregation stood up and clapped.

In honor of Kurt Eichenwald, he has become one of the two prime examples of the newest type of autist on my Bestiary of Autism, the Self Appointed Hero Autist.

Kurt manifests this form of autism under a mixture of both motives for this type of autism.


1. Kurt wants to be a hero, and while he could attain this through honest muckracking journalism, as that is honorable path to accolades for doing something just and laudable within his chosen craft, Kurt cannot do this because he allows his prejudices and moral weaknesses as a person to undermine his character.

As a result, he turns to dishonorable means in search of honors, like all the morally questionable activities he did to supposedly combat child sex slavery and pornography.

What he wants is to be recognized for trying to combat such evils, which is understandable.

What he doesn't want people to notice or talk about is all the unethical and shady things he did to earn such a reputation, and his ego is so wounded at the idea he might be regarded as a scummy human being he constantly lashes out at anyone who might imply his "heroic" acts are tainted by evil means to achieve just ends.


2. Kurt is, frankly, a perverse, bigoted, sexist sack of shit. No matter how much he tries to hide these shameful parts of his character, by both accident and intention he has shown the world he looks at pornography, hates minorities irregardless of his ideological statements to the contrary, and is a bitter, vengeful person who cannot forgive slights to his character.

And so his desire to be lauded and not condemned that he clings to is a security blanket against having to acknowledge these vile parts of himself and realize his virtue is a sham.
