I started this thread because I’m finally done being a corporate coward (I was fired) and I’m opening my own retail shop for custom motorbikes. I’m using LegalZoom and it’s insane how expensive every thing is. Anybody else here got a new small business they just started, or any interesting stories and advice for business kiwis?

I started an LLC to do contract work and cover employment gaps. I did the paperwork manually and it wasn't difficult if you've dealt with government before. The only difficult part was filing an initial financial report and determining if you need to pay taxes quarterly or not. You can save money doing the paperwork yourself and states have small business websites that guide you through the process. If sheniquia can get an LLC for her braiding/weave business without paying someone to file the paperwork, you can, too.
Don't operate as a sole proprietor because you expose yourself legally. Just pay the money to become an LLC and gain the liability shield. If you're confused about tax implications, there are a ton of free resources out there. Most small LLCs just operate as a passthrough entity which means the income is included in your personal taxes and you don't file quarterly.

Good advice on the llc. although I’m gonna be pouring a ton of my life savings into it, I am so inexperienced with doing small business stuff that at first i thought I’d do sole proprietorship. Got the llc in process with state and feds now. I‘m working on renting a retail space and creating my business plan to use for grants and maybe an SBA loan, as well as working in the inventory itself- restored motorbikes. Also trying to find a clothing wholesaler that can make the throwback moto jerseys I’ve designed. Thanks for the tip about figuring out when to file taxes. you’re right there’s tons of resources, just feels overwhelming.

You can withdraw from your 401K to fund your small business without a tax penalty. I don't know the exact details.
just feels overwhelming.
Yeah but you have to do it. It's worth the time researching.

If you're not completely tech illiterate, use Paperless-ngx for receipts and other documents. Paperless is server software that you upload PDFs and images to for categorization and archiving. You train the system initially and over time it will get better at auto categorizing your documents. It does this via optical character recognition. It is quite powerful for what it is and saves a lot of time and headache.

Do you know people who would you could solicit to invest in your business?

Whether you do or not- could you put together a business case where you will- based on your existing recognition among those in the market for custom motorcycles, and reasonable expectations for organic growth- turn a profit several years from now? Would this be affected by a severe economic downturn in the next year or two?

LegalZoom is a complete scam. The process of setting up an LLC in any state is ridiculously simple. Find out the process of submitting an Articles of Organization for your state, pay the filing fee, get your EIN and then go to a credit union or bank and setup a business account there. And that's pretty much it. There isn't anything else to it.

Not me but I'm friends with a guy who has a fairly successful dirtbike shop. I'd be happy to pass on any specific questions.

sorry to double post-but I can commit $150k of my own money and hope to supplement that with grants and and SBA loan. Your point about putting together a plan is dead on- im making a detailed cash flow plan and amgiving myself 1 year of runway to have a month where i break even. the economy is going to be a shitshow, but my customer target is super rich guys who buy these as toys. many of the bikes i have already purchased and own. they range from close to full factory restored to needing some tlc but in running condition. just like classic cars, they are assets which will hold their value and can be liquidated if the business goes tits up. unlike classic cars, there probably wont ever be a massive increase in value across the board like in the early 2000s.

But I was hoping to hear from other kiwis who own or have owned businesses. Any pitfalls to avoid, customers you wanted to kill, unexpected things, good and bad? I'm especially keen to hear about being an employer. i want to put off hiring anyone until absolutely necessary just because im nervous about dealing with hiring/firing

I’m not an owner, but I was the first hire at the start up company. I won’t get into it, but the manufacturing plant we have right beside me. It’s $2 million plus. Needless to say, turns out I’m pretty good at face of house operations.

He had asked me to work a full day, right after I had met him. He was too busy with meetings. He had not planned anything properly. So that’s the vibe right now.

It’s been going very well, and we have heard many people tell us about the competition that we are beating.

He said he wanted his first hire not to be retarded. And I have been thanked many times for being not retarded.

I have always had the mindset that if I can do it literally anyone else can. That has changed, I am utterly blown away by how fucking bad someone can be doing the simple act of selling.

This one man is 40 and has seen two Iraq tours. Completely retarded, but not in the stupid way.
He had no concept of customer service and thought that they want to listen to his stories for 5+ minutes. He could not pick up on the cues and had zero ability to convince anyone of what he was talking about.

It proved to me all the things I had thought.
A. An individuals natural abilities
B. Age truly means nothing
C. IQ really is all that matters

I am not trained in retail and have only had line kitchen work. Thats all I thought I was good for.

I’ve been put in many business situations that I now know for a fact would totally crush a retard. They would have no problem solving skills.

Another thing that was proven to me is that no one understands business. Or like basic concepts of our “functioning” economy. At least here in Canada people don’t comprehend the idea that costs add up.

Seeing all the backend work that goes into a good operation gives me a new litmus test as to who can actually rise above or sink bellow.

Im 21 and im not saying any of this egotisticaly, when he said he didn’t want to hire a retard I was very worried. Like I was ready to walk out HA. People have said to my face that I am a good salesman. That fills me with such fucking weird feelings, like if im their standard of good how bad is the job pooling?

I just like talking to people and thats really all I do.

Cringe double post but I would hire anyone who has a good work ethic and personality.
At this point, I would forgo any formal amounts of education as it really is useless. Training would be useful.

Find someone who you can trust, they can be a friend, but also has that firm separation of a work boss relationship.

Every day you’re going to meet different kinds of customers. I get people from all over the world, but you never know unless you talk to them about it and chatted them up.

Having a person thats good at bringing people back is the most important.

You want these guys to come to you every single time they need something right? Not just one and done.

Knowing who to go out of the way for to keep as a customer is also very important. You sell a house with a promised fridge? No fridge on move in day? Take that fucker shopping and buy him a fridge. The amount of benefits that brings is game changing. Who is he going to recommend as they person to sell your house? YOU, because you are fucking awesome.

The other side of the coin to this, don’t bother wasting your time on certain people. There are people who will simply want to waste your time. There are people who complain unfairly, they are strong armers, cheats, thiefs, crackheads. Boomers, Iranians, for me Indian men. You can never lose your cool either that does even more damage than mistakes.

Thanks for your response. I feel the same way as your boss- i need my first hire to not be a retard. It’s hard to judge people when they interview though. Plus, I’m looking for an employee, not a partner. I don’t know if what I have to offer would be appealing to someone who is not retarded. In the area I live in I think I’d need to pay someone like $40-$50 per hour to compete with other start ups and companies and so, I won’t be able to afford an employee for a long time.

Though I understand where he is coming from, I'm going to agree to disagree with this comment because. IMHO...

1. Natural abilities are trumped by the will to succeed. You have to be so incredibly stubborn if your idea has that potential to get yourself ahead.

You have no idea on how many times I have heard,..

" You can't do that because you do not have a degree".
"You can't do that because on who you hang around with".
"You can't do that because you are too old".

Yup I heard a lot of bullshit and I just plowed on though to get ahead.

2. Brutally... for 17+ years... I was discriminated by age here in Silicon Valley. Depending on where you live means how much discrimination you will receive. I've been discriminated most of my life because of whom I am.

3. Common Sense trumps IQ every single time. This is what I have seen here in my region and experience globally. I have see incredibly smart people be so incredibly ignorant in the facts of REAL LIFE.

I see a lot of people with intellect be so fucking stupid because it is easier to listen to the echo chamber of diversive ideology than to learn about things that are not in their social prison they created themselves... one brick at a time.

As stated before. WHAT EVER YOU WANT TO DO.... DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING YOUR NEXT MOVE.

yea, i've spent over decade in silicon valley and my experiences were mixed. But I think the above poster made some good points. intelligence is a huge factor when youre very young. If nothing else, it gives you confidence.

do you have any anecdotes from your experiences running your business?

Fair call mate. You clearly believe in it. If you do, are there people who you can reach out to who would stake you to get going? Let me put it this way, say you could get $50k from friends and family at the start rather than going all in yourself. If you do need more capital a year down the track because you aren't breaking even, possibly because of an economic downturn, is that going to be easy to achieve, vs. if you're able to get a properly cheap loan now or offer a minority ownership stake which you could buy out later?

Do you have a plan as to how you're going to attract interest? I assume, if you're talking a retail space, it's not just going to be doing up bikes and hoping to flip them on BringATrailer?
