Kim Kardashian West appeared to have the time of her life over Halloween weekend, with a trio of costumes (yes, a trio) to, as she said, pay homage to iconic music legends. But many social media users weren’t pleased when the reality TV star dressed as one of R&B’s most beloved singers: Aaliyah.

Kardashian West, 37, took on the late singer’s look from her 2001 hit “Try Again,” wearing a bejeweled choker, with a matching bra and black pants. Naturally, she showed off the costume on social media, writing, “Baby Girl Aaliyah.”

Social media users quickly took notice, and began criticizing the star.

“Legend or not Aaliyah is a black woman and you’re not. It’s offensive and you shouldn’t push this limit, but ok…,” one person tweeted to the star.

Another Twitter user simply wrote: “Kim Kardashian as Aaliyah? It’s a no.”

This isn’t the first time the mom of two has faced claims of cultural appropriation and racism. She was accused over the summer of blackface after she posted promotional photos from a shoot to rep her Kim Kardashian West beauty line. She also came under fire just months later for defending makeup artist and beauty vlogger Jeffree Star’s racist comments.

The controversy nearly overshadowed Kardashian West’s other show-stopping Halloween looks — she also dressed as Madonna and Cher. However, some found nothing wrong with the star’s Aaliyah display.

“I HATE when y’all make me defend Kim Kardashian but her Aaliyah costume was nothing even adjacent to cultural appropriation. Please stop,” a social media user tweeted.

“Someone explain to me what’s wrong with Kim Kardashian dressing as Aaliyah…. she looks great,” another added.

One person pointed to Aaliyah’s legendary star status as reason for the backlash, writing, “I think the reason ppl are mad that Kim Kardashian dressed as Aaliyah for Halloween is cause Aaliyah is precious to most!”

She was/is. I remember when she died there was a lot of press coverage. It turned me off from her music and movies, tbh.

She's just one of those people that were talented, died young and people obsess over.
She's like the black man's Marylin Monroe, I take it. To me, she was never that attractive or talented.

That's supposed to be Aaliyah? Looks much more like Cher to me.
I know right? She should’ve either dressed as a gypsy or native american as well. Or both as a tribute to Cher/Aaliyah and gone for a trifecta of outrage.

I'm going as Kim Kardashian for Halloween tonight. But my costume is just my normal clothes and a still pic of her taking dick from her sex tape with the caption "lol Armenia" taped to my chest.

“Legend or not Aaliyah is a black woman and you’re not. It’s offensive and you shouldn’t push this limit, but ok…,”
you're right random person, we should send them black folks back to africa so their culture and likenesses will never be harmed and stolen by the evil whites again.

She didn’t even darken up her face with makeup or anything, lmao. I loved Aaliyah and while I don’t care for Kim her costume wasn’t bad, even if she does look more like Cher.
EDIT: also friendly reminder that twitter also chimped out when her half-sister Kylie wore a Selena Quintanilla shirt.

She should've gone as the Armenian genocide. It's her own culture, plus it's completely fictional so no one could get offended anyway.
I'm trying to imagine her walking around looking like she's hung on a cross or holding her severed shrunken head.

If she wasn't a dumb bitch, she would be the embodiment of an Armenian genocide by fucking niggers and having mongrel hellspawn. But then again, if she wasn't a dumb bitch, she wouldn't be fucking niggers, but as she is, no useful gene pools are being polluted. It's just hopefully the minds of women aren't polluted who want to be like KK.
