Came across this exceptional screed today from the guy who's been translating the Kaiji manga for the last 8 years and thought it was interesting.

I QUIT

I'm done stressing out over stupid uneventful chapters of Fukumoto's evil series that promote and revel in demons, darkness, sin, lying, deceit, theft, selfishness, gambling, crime, murder, godlessness and immorality. I have come to know God and this hobby simply is not compatible with my faith. The blog being taken down was a sign to me that it is time for me to get away from this waste of time I have overindulged in for 8 years of my life. I would give back all the so-called "fame", all the money that you all donated, and all the skills i acquired if it meant I could go back and learn to love the Lord sooner. Then I would have made more of the time I had with my dad and honored him while he was still alive instead of describing what kinds of works I was translating to him on what turned out to be his death bed and watching him squirm in horror at all the terrible things Fukumoto has written about.

I first got into Kaiji because of its naked description of the twisted morals of society as they are, like Tonegawa's "Money is worth more than life" speech. I cheered for Kaiji as he showed how a Slave could beat an Emperor. I thought there would be more of that "overcoming the morally corrupt society" vibe. But over time I feel as though Fukumoto forgot the morals that founded his early works and has begun to slip away and side more with the Tonegawa mindset. In my eyes, the Tonegawa series and all the comedy spin offs focusing on villains show more and more how Fukumoto has lost his initial character and is now selling himself as a laughing stock and giving into the darkness that it seemed like he was trying to fight against. Washizu went from an evil corrupt murderer that was possessed by demons to a comedic hero helped by all the gods of every world religion for no reason but a gradual change in Fukumoto's mindset, it seems to me. His character shows the transformation of Fukumoto's morals in a nutshell. So unless the themes of Fukumoto's works change back to how they used to be, I refuse to participate in them any longer.

I would say I'm sorry to let you down, but there are a great number of translators itching to get their hands on Kaiji, Hero and Mamiya so I'm sure it will take no time at all for somebody to spring up to replace me. Tambur is still as motivated as ever so definitely reach out to him and send him your translations of the new chapters. I entrust the decision of whose translation to use to him. I have talked with Biggums about quitting before and he said years ago he was ready to be done so we will most likely need a new cleaner as well. The upcoming Kaiji chapter will be my last one, I have already finished the translation and Tambur is typesetting it now. The one after it is up for grabs. I hope you all see what I'm talking about and understand my perspective. I might get into streaming again, I'm not quitting mahjong. I might feel more up to being present on the discord as well. I archived too late but apparently he was pissed off that Washizu's gay or something, but after a couple whiny comments he removed that and left the following comment of his own

Ok I removed the homosexuality part. I'm struggling with my own homosexual urges so it came to mind but I didn't mean to imply that was the biggest problem with his works. It's the other aspects conflicting with my faith that are the real reason. I don't know what God thinks about gay people but there do seem to be some that are inclined towards it and have no attraction towards the opposite sex at all. So I don't know. I'm sorry for my callous inclusion of that word. I should have considered that was what people would notice the most.

I really hope this is some kind of joke. This is fucking insane. I know all localizers/translators are generally fucking nuts, especially after having spent so long learning Japanese, but this is a whole new level.
This guy, "sonickrazy" really does live up to his name. No sane person religion or no would go on and on about how a silly jap manga about gambling is full of demons and possesions by demons and shit. Fuckin' yikes, broski.

The fansub and fantranslation community needs a megathread, if there isn't one already. It's been a neverending deathspiral of needless rivalries and bickering over meaningless details (Is it better to translate "onee-sama" as "big sis", "sissy", or just leave it alone because the context cannot be translated into english? If you answered at all, please please PLEASE get a life!) since... goddamn longer than I've been alive.
I think only Biblical translators, Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts, and alternate history pseudo-writers are more autistically unproductive and self-destructive in their respective hobbies. And all of them only by virtue of being around way longer.

You can argue English does as well. We have uppercase and lowercase letters which is very analogous to hiragana and katakana, and kanji are basically just words, and we have a shit ton of words that are pronounces wildly differently from how they're spelled, to the point where we had to invent the International Phonetic Alphabet just to explain to people how you even say the fucking words we make by mashing random letters together. So it's actually kind of like 4 alphabets, since with Japanese you don't need an IPA system, you just use kana.
Also it's not an alphabet, it's a syllabary.
 
After 2.5 years of serious study I've just gotten to the point where I can read shounen action manga if that's any metric. I recommend genki 1 and 2 and joukyu he no tobira

There's some real oddballs out there too. I've had some first-hand experience with several. I think a mega thread would be worth it but I think would require more research on my part. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head right now are Hanyaan/JoJo Project and jaimini
 
You can be religious and still enjoy translating a manga series ffs. If you didn't like a piece of work no longer, without going into a long-winded spiel about how "evil" a work is and that it's affecting your faith and getting into personal shit, just announce you're retiring and handing it off to someone else and move on. Just don't be a moralizing faggot. How often do fan translators and subbers go "woe is me, translating is pain", anyhow? Never thought to look into the fan-subbing scene to see what's up.

I haven't read Kaiji, so I have no fucking clue what he was going on about. Best I got from the times I glanced at it is it has something to do with gambling for your life and that no matter what the main character does, he can't get out of it. Right? How're you so shocked to learn about some heinous and ungodly shit that goes on in the gambling rings and the like?

Lot of them. Usually comes down to they haven't figured out how to make money with their skills (or just pure autism) so the e-fame that their moderately popular niche series garners is all they have. I mean look at how James is bloviating at the beginning of this post, going on about morals and shit in a fucking seedy gambling manga. I mean I'd be upset too if I spent so much time and money learning JP (and in his case, Mahjong) just to realize 8 years later that I don't agree with it on such a base level.
Scanlators are also absolutely autistic about series sniping too which I've seen spark into some pretty funny arguments. I recall once sniping 3 chapters or so of a series from a super slow group (6 months between releases) and after I got bored the group leader started sending me emails trying to rub it in my face that I stopped working on it

Never looked into the scanalation groups. Just read the mangos I liked and waited for translations. Didn't know series and chapter sniping was a thing. Explains a lot about some long waits.

I heard its easier if you have knowledge of a romance language, I'm certainly finding it easier than English. I cannot emphasize enough how batshit retarded the pronunciation is in English, not a single fucking letter sounds the same as in my native language.

Japanese is a strange beast.

On one hand you can get a good understanding of their phonetic writing system, kana, in just a few days. They use syllables rather than individual sounds as the basis of their words, as a result of that they have an alphabet about twice the size of ours since it's a long list of combinations of consonants and vowels ie. there are separate characters for ka ki ku ke and ko. And you have to learn it twice over because they have two sets of symbols for the same sounds. Hiragana for native words, katakana for foreign ones. It's about equivalent to learning 4 new English alphabets, but ultimately it's just a matter of study. You learn the symbol and the sound it represents. And since each symbol has a single pronunciation, and they don't use long and short vowels or dipthongs, it's actually more simple phonetically than most other languages. That's the easy part.

But then you have to learn thousands of kanji which have no phonetic identifiers. You have to learn multiple readings of those thousands of kanji. You have to learn how kanji are intertwined with kana. You have to learn the bizarre syntax and the particle system they use to categorize words within sentences. It's basically an alien language if all you know is English. That's the bitch.
 
I mean, if we remove the lol-esque religeous tones he has an interesting criticism that the series became torture porn. I don't really follow Kaiji (too much grim in my taste) so I don't know if he is right.
