Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker - Won an Oscar

I'm legit shocked. We'll see when the movie comes out, but consider me intrigued.

I like the trailers, but let's call this what it really is: Oscar bait. Warner Brothers knows that a story of a mentally ill man who rises up and overcomes his handicaps wouldn't put asses in seats, so they slapped a supervillain name on it.

Joaquin Phoenix already said that comic book purists wouldn't like this version.

And yes, it is Oscar bait due to the short time prior to voting on nominees. The film is released wide October 4th, and Oscar nominee voting starts 3 months later. This leaves the film still fresh on critics' and judges' minds, while still pulling in a modest profit from budget cinemas still playing it.

It's definitely shaping up to be pretty special. If anything, I wasn't this hyped since Batman: The Dark Knight. I get the same vibe from the trailers as I did back then. I dunno man, this could be yuuuuge.

EDIT: Made a quick and dirty 1080p wallpaper out of one of the shots in the trailer. Yewtoob compression doesn't help so it doesn't look as sharp as I would like.

Looks quite dark, I like it. It's amazing how much creepier and menacing this Joker looks compared to edgy, tattooed and gangsta Leto's Joker.

Joker's never been terribly deep as a character no matter what they've tried to do with him. He can be whatever the story really needs him to be, and the best summary of his past is probably his 'multiple choice' quote as a handy wink wink to the audience. That being said, if there has to be a film about him, this is pretty as it goes.

Actually, it being divorced from the DCCU works best in its favor, because you don't have Supervillain Joker to compare him to. The character's backstory - at least in my opinion - has always worked best as Jack Napier: sad, failed comedian whose best shot at regaining control of his life is - ironically - a conscience rejection of control and inhibition that he only realizes after he's lost everything. It's endearing, even with regards to who it's about.

tl;dr Movie looks neat. Got a good feeling about it, I'll give this a shot.

Cautiously optimistic. It might be a lousy-but-pretty film that makes for good trailers.

And it might be filled with bullshit. Does Hollywood have the ability to make a movie with this tone without making the rich characters all stand-ins for Blonald Grumph? I really doubt it, especially after the comments about it being extremely political. I like the idea of making Bruce Wayne's dad a less-than-wholesome guy, but I don't need anymore TDS in my entertainment, thanks.

Normally I'm not interested in comic book inspired movies but I'll check this one out in the near future. One thing I'm disappointed is that I wish this filmed showed the Joker as the Red Hood and how he became the Joker as a result of Batman knocking him into a chemical vat. Of course, the movie is telling it's own story and I respect that.

Jack Napier is a Burton Batman thing and he's a the guy that killed Bruce's parents in it as well.

The comedian story he just never has a name, least that I recall. Don't have TKJ laying around to check though.

Yes, it's "comic book-based stuff," but I at least see an attempt to do something different with it, Oscar bait or not.

The thing that makes me want to see it is his voice, its just so quiet and measured, even meek at times.

Then there is the way he forces his emotions to fit in, like that laugh in the final trailer.

It feels to me like the Superman thing about Clark being the disguise. I wonder if this movie will posit that society forces people into roles, and once in a while someone breaks free from their roles.

His mother also seems to be the last thing that is holding him back from just going off the deep end, as it is likely he doesn't want her to know what he really is (given on how the trailers present the son-mother mechanic) once she is gone he is free from the responsibility of her emotional well being.

Funny, because all we deal nowadays is a lot of angry unremarkable women demanding the world to recognize their "genius" and be given positions of power and influence simply because they are women and its "their turn", actual merit or qualifications be damned.

I stand corrected! I could have sworn the name 'Jack' came from Killing Joke though. Although I could be misremembering or only remember the first name since it Moore left it ambiguous. Either way, I just default to the KJ storyline.
