On January 6, 2021, supporters of US President Donald Trump attempted to overturn his November 2020 election loss to Joe Biden by entering the U.S. Capitol in mass which disrupted the joint session of Congress assembled to count electoral votes to formalize Joe Biden's victory. In the aftermath of this event, the FBI by the end of the month had opened more then 400 cases and issued 500 subpoenas and search warrants related to the events in Washington, D.C. on the day of January 6.
Aided in the hunt by groups such as the crowdsourced Sedition Hunters and sites like Sedition Tracker the FBI has not stopped looking for suspects and as of August 2023 over 1,000 people relating to the January 6 US Capitol incident have been charged with federal crimes. Sentences and punishments vary on a case by case basis.
