Sigourney Weaver stated that Cameron will continue "the same themes of greed and and callousness of the corporations and plight of the indigenous people."

The first sequel is due out in 2020 but if the length of time between movies, who knows if audiences will have patience if they don't get tired of the heavy environmental lecturing.

From what I've read, All 4 movies together are supposed to be like this one long ass movie. Jim had the writing teams synchronized so that all the film beats works.

Obviously it'll be the same message. Avatar's plot was intentionally designed to appeal to as many idiots as possible and it clearly worked.

James Cameron doesn't really care about messages. He just wants to keep inventing new cameras and grift audiences out of another two billion dollars.

I never even liked the first Avatar - its only real draw to me is that it looked pretty. Other than that, fuck whomever thought continuing this shite was OK. Fuck them hard!

What more could you do with Avatar? Didn't they beat the evil tree haters at the end? It's Transformers all over again. Just continue the story long after it's finished.

Like tens of millions of other people, I bought into the hype of Avatar. Years later, I realized I had forgotten all about the movie and I have no desire to see the movie, let alone its sequel, ever again.

These will be Cameron's most forgettable films despite almost certainly being his most profitable.

I wonder if I'll root for the humans in all of them.

You're not supposed to, but with how preachy these films are likely going to be, you'll probably be doing the right thing by the time the 2nd act starts in any of these (if you're tolerant enough not to start from the very start of things.).

The original was actually racist as fuck, too, because these natives needed some white savior to show them how to be better natives.

Is this because Disney made Avatar land in Animal Kingdom?

Also I think it's funny that the highest grossing movie ever is universally regarded as "ok"

It was also super patronizing by implying the Na'vi are all noble savages in total harmony with nature and themselves.

Which is bullshit and almost fetishistic. In the words of Plinkett: "Savage races without technology can be just as fucking brutal to each other as we can."

Has to be, otherwise I can't fathom why they extended the deal from two movies to four.

I would. Hell, they were the only relatable characters in the first film.
