The virgin Mary is the Boba Fett of the Bible. Only a minor side-character with barely any dialogue, hardly any screen-time, and yet gets a disproportionate amount of fan-boys, expanded-universe canon and merchandise from Mexicans.

In the Christian religion, worship of anyone that's not God is heresy. Of course, Catholics will say that they are not worshipping Mary but are rather venerating her instead.

So yes, worship of Mary, or anyone besides Jesus, is heresy for Christians.
