Is trying to contact aliens a mistake?

It would be a bad idea, but we don't have the capacity to transmit any signal strong enough to be conceivably picked up by anyone, so it doesn't matter.
Yet a technologically advanced alien race probably has the capability to capture and interpret whatever weak signals we might transmit; that is, if they're looking in our direction. Read The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu. It will make you suitably paranoid about contact with alien races. The dominant species of a given habitable planet capable of supporting sentient life will almost always be its apex predator, top of their respective food chain. Let me put it this way: probability is they would view humanity on Terra as a potential threat, not as a partner in exploration or other Gene Roddenberry-inspired hippy-dippy bullshit fantasy. The smart play is to stay quiet and still in this big galaxy of ours and hope no one notices us because (paraphrasing a line from Peaky Blinders), big fucks small, always.

In such a vast universe that we live in, why would aliens chose to visit earth? I would imagine that it's severely lackluster compared to other planets that are out there. I would say that people over at NASA shouldn't waste their time on it.

Yeah, insult them and tell them they are fugly bastards. Leave the coordinates of Venus, and see how the planet get vaporied by near light relativistic kill vehicles.
We don't gain much, but at least the dumbass scientist have to say that the Earth is the second planet from the Sun. This is what you get for demoting Pluto.

Yes.

Why wouldn't an alien civilization snuff out any potential competition before it poses a threat?
Actually, would there be fighting over resources when you basically have enough space and resources even in a single solar system to have growth going on for millenia. Most of the universe are un inhabitable, so you can basically stripmine like 99% of the Galaxy no problem.

Heck, it's not even sure that ayylmaos evolved from aggressive territorial animals. They might have a more alien outlook on life. Who knows.

A technologically advanced alien race will know we're here just by looking, whether we intentionally send any signal or not does not matter.

I've read the novel, it's great. In it, they use the POWER OF THE SUN for amplification, which is not something we can do in real life.

i have the trilogy as 1 single book its huge, its next on my list to read, the Netflix adaptation is coming out soon, and the Chinese version by Tencent was surprisingly decent (the white monkeys in it are hilarious, so bad at acting)
i have heard that it is sometimes difficult to follow the Chinese names, but besides that ive been told its a great epic

Ya have to look it as

1. The universe and its resources are vast but are finite.

2. Any intelligent life is competing for those resources and will eventually impede you acquiring them if left unchecked.

So from there, assuming your goal is the uninterrupted growth of your own species the logical thing to do would be to kill off any competitor before they become too powerful.
