I feel like I can't be the only one with this scenario happening often:
Click on a thread, it goes to the "first unread" message. Or...
Click on a search result of your posts, it goes to your post, there is a "First Unread" link on top that takes you to the "first unread" message in the thread.
But, at some point, you want to read a post that happens later in the thread from someone, so you click their user name, click "postings", then click a message you want to read, and it's hundreds of posts ahead of the "first unread" post from before. Now, your "first unread" is updated to now be the page of the thread that is hundreds of posts ahead. Your "first unread" is now going to be the next page of the thread from there. If you want to read the messages from the original "first unread" point, you have to manually keep track of where you left off via a text file or post it note or something like that until you get to the new updated "first unread" point, where it now "catches up" and you can use the "first unread" feature properly again.
A solution would be to allow the user to set the "first unread" point manually, so they can easily bookmark where they left off in a case like the above, where they skipped ahead in the thread temporarily just to read some specific posts.
I did try to "unwatch" then re-watch a thread, but this doesn't work. Xenforo seems to remember the "first unread" points for users, so in the example above, my "first unread" point is "stuck" hundreds of posts ahead until I manually catch up to it. If I want to bookmark where I am in the thread until I catch up to the new "first unread" point, I have to manually track where I left off with a text file or post it note.
I remember that on the Something Awful forums (web 1.0 vbulletin), this was easily achieved, by just clicking the bookmark icon to unbookmark the thread, clicking it again to re-bookmark it, then refreshing the page, and your "unread" point is reset to that page.
Does Xenforo just not have a feature like this, or am I missing it?
