Is Reagan actually "conservative" by today's standards? - And why is he beloved?

I'd say so.

he did everything in his power to erode worker rights, environmental regulations. Basically if you weren't some suit making millions by manipulating money, he wanted you to stfu and eat your gruel.

He even had solar panels providing free and clean energy removed from the white house for no apparent reason.

Then there was the matter of his administration selling weapons to a terrorist state in order to fund an illegal war in central america. or literally financing radical islam in afghanistan.
Lol, libtard.

As someone who lived through the Reagan era it's pretty amusing to hear some of these opinions.

He was not perfect, but he was a very, very good president. Stood up to the USSR when liberal shitheads were willing sell their souls (and ours) to them. Kickstarted the disasterous Carter economy. Restored us to respectability in the post-Vietnam world. The media and libtards tried to paint him as dumb, but one look at the personal letters he wrote makes that take a terrible one.

The Monday morning quarterbacking ("like, the USSR was always gonna fall!") is similar in tone to the lectures I get these days from 40-50 year old bartenders and never-weres who can tell you for a fact that Trump TOTALLY violated the emoluments clause. They're experts, you see. So too with some of you EXCEPTIONAL "Reagan scholars ".
Would you say the hippie era parallels the SJW era of today?

LOL I'm old but I'm not THAT old. On the surface there appears to be similarities, though. But a good number of those hippies turned into yuppies in the 80's. As mildly disliked as yuppies were, they ended up being productive members of society as opposed to filthy, unwashed hippie vermin. We can only pray SJW'S morph into something similar.

Fuck Reagan, he was the first amnesty cuck and the one to let the neo-ziocons in. The USSR was collapsing on its own and we would've "won" the Cold War with or without him, but he took credit like the hollywood phony he was.

There is a direct, unbroken ideological chain from him to Jeb!. If you ask me, the last good president before Trump was Nixon. The never-trumpers are probably right that Reagan would've hated Trump.

Why is it so common do poor research? The article has only 15 comments and the second one clearly points out that, yes, there was a reason, as reported in an article from 1986.

In short: they had to fix the roof and had to remove the panels in order to do so. Putting them back would be more expensive than their expected return (particularly if they had to fix the roof again).

I am not surprised, a couple of years back someone tried to get me in on what he claimed was a good investment in solar panels with the new tax breaks. I did the research into expected longevity, fire/electrical risk, expected electricity cost reduction. Allround it was a terrible investment from a financial point, even with the tax breaks. Buying government bonds gave a better return and those are typically known as a safe, low-return investment. That was in 2015, so there is no doubt that 1986 solar panels were completely impractical.

I'm sure there are plenty of bad things to say about reagan, but removing the solar panels isn't one of them and if you read a little further you'd realise that.

"Conservative" has always been a relative term.

The eighteenth century Tories were pissed about religious tolerance. Now conservatives bust their asses trying to build religious coalitions.

Conservatives opposed the expansion of the vote to women and the poor... but embraced them when they turned out to be really really conservative.

Conservatives in the 1980s wanted to be the world police and worked hard to empower international organizations. Now they want to do things like leave the EU and UN and the ruling conservative faction of the US is of the "let them kill eachother" mindset.

Reagan once said trees cause pollution. While its true he was joking, most people took that statement at face value (he was kind of sorta right), He wasn't a great president, he bungled a lot of things and as the Alzheimer's set in other people had to run the show. Iran Contra was an example of how things went bad. Also WW3 nearly happened on his watch because someone forgot to tell the Soviets NATO was having a military exercise in Europe.

Ronald Reagan: B- President.

(He was lousy Governor; he enacted gun control in California because Black Panthers with rifles: scary. He's the reason my dad joined the NRA).

President Trump critiqued Ronald Reagan during an exclusive interview with Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle" Friday night, telling host Laura Ingraham that the 40th president was "not good on trade."

The comment came after Ingraham brought up China's human rights record during a discussion of Trump's trade policy toward Beijing.

"[China's] got a million people in reeducation camps, internment camps. The Catholics were getting missals in their pews at Christmas that had tributes to [President] Xi [Jinping] instead of 'Silent Night'. Crazy stuff happening," Ingraham said. "Reagan saw the power of the moral argument for freedom and married it to the economic and military argument for 'peace through strength.' Can you do more on that front without damaging your ability to make future trade agreements?"

"Well, I’m riding a fine line," Trump responded. "Because we’re making, not good trade deals, we’re making great trade deals."

"But human rights count," Ingraham interjected.

"They do count," Trump answered. "I was a big fan of Reagan, but he wasn’t heavy into it. He wanted to do certain things. He wasn’t really heavy into it, but he wasn’t also making trade deals. He let Japan come in and take over our auto market. You know, as much as I like Reagan, he was not good on trade

Earlier in the interview, Trump said that the U.S. had a "great relationship with China" before claiming that the Asian nation was "having the worst [economic] year that they've had. Last year was the worst they had."

"You know what we did?" the president said. "We opened it up to banking, but for banking, for our farmers, for manufacturers ... it’s great.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, is scheduled to visit Washington next week to sign an interim trade deal with the United States. The Trump administration postponed planned tariff increases following the announcement of the so-called “Phase 1” deal in October. But earlier punitive duties imposed by both sides on billions of dollars of each other’s goods stayed in place.

"People don’t realize I still have the tariffs," Trump said. "Twenty-five percent tariffs on China, $250 billion worth of goods, I still have those. And by the way, remember they used to say we paid for it? No, no. China devalued their currency and they’re paying for it."

Nice change of pace to see Tramp actually publicly criticize other presidents other than Obama in similarity to what he did in his books.

How will conservatives and liberals respond to Trump's critical analysis on Reagan?

No not really. I have looked into things historically and even back then he was the softer, gentler version of the conservative three (him, Thatcher, Mulroney) in both fiscal and social policy.

Reagan may have declared himself in league with anti abortion groups but he never tried to recriminlize it like the Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney attempted to in Canada. Reagan may have disliked the poor and the gays but he wasn't out sounding mobs of police to beat poor people for protesting economic policies like Thatcher did nor did he try to attack gays with a ''section 28'' type law like what was in Thatcher's Britain. There were no riots in Reagan's term at all. He let in refugee's by very large amounts (as most people are aware of). He was quite centrist.

This thread has been dead for a year. Was your opinion that important that you needed to necropost?
