Is forum culture really better than social media - KF v. Instagram

I've come to realize my Instagram addiction has died ever since making an account here and I'm reasoning whether that's a good or bad thing
You can argue social media is more grounded in reality, as you're viewing the lives of other people, but it's also a breeding ground for jealousy

Social media sites are mmorpgs where people roleplay as better versions of themselves. They are as real as reality tv.

Forums are more real. Anonymity lets you hide, but it also lets you just be yourself without the pressure of potential punishment for wrong think.

Yes, but the bar is so low it barely matters. A forum can be just as bad as (if not worse than) Social Media if the powermods are bad enough, and given their tendency to be niche at best in the modern-day it's a miracle one stays alive at all.
Meanwhile social media is a never-ending parade of sensory overload, mostly designed to denigrate your self-esteem and critical thinking skills for one reason or another ("this is bad and here's why", "you're bad if you do this", biased/fake news, constant advertisement, etc.), that provides so little benefit (to most average people; it's great for advertisers and celebrities) beyond some vague sense of being "in the know" that it's a demonic miracle that it's remained so relevant for so long.

Pick your poison, pretty much. Forums can only get as bad as social media if they go full-on power cabal like Reddit imo.

Anonymity also means people are free to push their bullshit opinions and get no flak. I know people who've been suspended from college for being chuds on FB/IG, on social media there's active repercussions for being retarded
Do they deserve it? I don't really think so, but the point still stands. Social policing isn't a thing on here, which is why if under 18s were on this forum for example they'd probably be severely fucked relative to social media

What gets me the most about platforms like Tiktok and Instagram these days is the insane amount of self-enforced censorship its users partake in to avoid triggering algorithms that remove or demonetize posts with certain terms. This results in all those weird phrasings you see on there like "I'd unalive myself if that happened", "I was SA'd in high school", "better than s*x, "I d*ed laughing" etc etc.

It's had a really weird, chilling effect on the way zoomers communicate not just on these platforms but even in IRL; I have heard teachers describe kids using terms like "SA'd" or "unalived" in their essays, it's basically normalizing self-censorship in a profoundly creepy way.

I would also add that it is also better than IBs since we have a loose sense of identity here that isn't too compromising which allows us to block any annoying faggot.
Free speech doesn't work if we don't have freedom of ignoring whoever we want since pavlovian conditioning is a thing.
