I watched one episode, never went back to it, a year and a half later, curiosity finally got the better of me and I watched the whole subbed season. It was edgy in one moment and kawaii in another, depressing in one, and romantic in another, the plot was at least somewhat interesting, but it was only Lucy I was really interested in as a character, it felt needlessly edgy to the point I think it detracted from the story, and the climax was disappointing to say the least. I looked up the manga ending afterwards and thought it vastly superior.

Watched it years and years ago, didn't the main characters cousin also get raped by her uncle or something? Happy shit.
Puppy scene really stuck with me, Elfen Lied was probably a bad choice for a starter anime for a like 12 year old me.

As a fan of all those things I didn't care for it at all. Admittedly I only watched the anime though.
Whole thing felt pointless and gratuitous in a not fun or meaningful way. It just sort of is, and what it is is bad.

Elfen Lied's kind of baby's first edgy anime. A few anime I recommend (for a more mature audience, some with its fair share of gore without it being for the sake of "lol shocking" ):

Baby's first seinen manga/anime.
Not a particular good introduction to it either but at least compelling for edgy teenagers.

About 12 years ago, it was the go-to anime for morons who would upload poorly manipulated screenshots as "art" on DeviantArt. I got so fucking sick of seeing that generic, shitty art style mixed with pretentious bullshit.

I kinda liked it, but it does suffer greatly from never getting a sequel, especially with the shitty end it gets. For a quick watch it's a decent choice, but definitely no 10/10.
I tend to compare it to Deadman Wonderland (the anime), as they both suffer from the same problems (no sequel, no proper end etc) while both being half-edgy shows.
