I just liked it. It’s influence on cooking shows and how cooking shows film chefs really was cool.

I think the OG Japanese was cool. Over-the-top, but it was a fun show. Piqued my interest in cooking and damned me into becoming a weeb. Sakai was my favorite, didn’t care for the Italian dude.

American was good. The Filipino twink couldn’t match the OG with his sound effect bullshit and lack of kayfabe. Flay, although an asshole, was the best to watch. Cat Cora was a useless lesbian called into replace Wolfgang Puck.

Didn’t watch Canada or Desert Canada editions because they don’t matter.

Thai is hard to find and I liked what I’ve seen.

this is still on my short list of "now it is time to be really fucking great at something" music

If memory serves me, the reason the OG Japanese episodes are such a pain in the ass to find is the music: a lot of it was licensed from anime like the Gundam series or something to that effect.
Goddamn did it work, though.

A lot of the stuff worked for how over-the-top it was despite literally being a panel show mixed with competitive cooking.

I really want to try to track down the old VHS copies of the dubbed show. Back in the 90’s you still got hastily licensed dubbing and subbing where shit was rushed into production before legal could fuck everything.

My favorite chef has always been Masaharu Morimoto. He just has a certain charm to him, and I've always liked how creative he was with his dishes.

I did see that Archive has a bunch of the original Iron Chef videos on their website. Haven't seen the new Iron Chef iteration yet, though, so I don't know if Quest for an Iron Legend is any good.

everybody knows about the Earthbound Guy as a panelist, but was there anybody else of similar weeb street cred?

I was on an Iron Chef binge recently. Mr. Bowl had never really watched the series, so I told him to sit his ass down and watch greatness unfold before his very eyes. Morimoto-san ripping Bobby Flay a new asshole for standing on the cutting board was the greatest moment in culinary television history. He’s just now getting into the Ohta Faction lore.

I would like to take a moment to toast Masahiko Kobe and Chen Kenichi. Losing Chen-san was a blow to the soul. :(

It's still one of my favorite shows due to the amount of over-the-topness of acting. Though it's great too, just because it's not as gimmicky as a lot of the modern day cooking competition shows.

Officials with the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner on Thursday confirmed that Food Network star Anne Burrell took her own life last month, according to multiple media reports.

The beloved 55-year-old celebrity chef, host of the network’s “Worst Cooks in America,” was found on June 17 in her shower, unresponsive with an assortment of approximately 100 pills surrounding her, PEOPLE reported.

The 911 call came in at around 7:50 a.m., with the reporting party telling the operator they were concerned she’d suffered cardiac arrest.

Paramedics responded to the apartment and declared Burrell deceased.

According to the Chief Medical Examiner’s report, her death was caused by “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.”

Both cetirizine and diphenhydramine are antihistamines. Amphetamines are often used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, while ethanol is a compound found in alcohol.

While the celebrity chef’s final season of “Worst Cooks” with co-host Gabe Bertaccini is scheduled to premiere July 28, the Food Network ran some of the fan-favorite’s most popular episodes back-to-back on June 28 in honor of her legacy.

Tyler Florence, Burrell’s co-star on the show for seven seasons, described her as “Mensa smart with razor wit and sincere kindness,” in a statement posted to Instagram on the day of her death.

“I am heartbroken,” he wrote.

Other Food Network luminaries, including Bobby Flay, Giada De Laurentiis and Alex Guarnaschelli, also paid tribute to Burrell, who got her start on the network as a sous chef on “Iron Chef America,” a role that eventually led to her own show, “Secrets of a Restaurant Chef,” that premiered in 2008.

Buddy Valastro, star of “Cake Boss,” also took to Instagram to share a tribute to Burrell.

“Anne, your passion, energy, and love for food lit up every kitchen,” he wrote. “You were a true force and a beautiful soul. Rest in peace, Chef. We will miss you dearly.”

I'm not sure why they're calling it a suicide instead of an od. I doubt she left a note if they waited 5 weeks to reveal a cause of death.

That's really sad, man. I mostly knew her as "that Food Channel bull dyke" since that's what my dad called her, but she seemed alright. It sounds like there's not much reason to suspect foul play. Where's the Food Network going to get all its reaction shots of trained chefs looking shocked and disgusted by totally real and not rehearsed kitchen mishaps now?
