Inner crisis over Taliban - Were they the good guys all along?

As much as I hate any non-secular politician, the absolute lack of resistance to their takeover is pretty fucking telling. It's like any popular uprising. 20 or so percent like them, 50 pecent are indifferent, 20 percent hate their guts and the remaining 10 percent flees the country, because the new boss is out for their heads. Imposing your secular values on people who want to live by their own values is pretty cringe, especially since those guys have been shooting at invaders for last 200 years.

The resistance will never come from the cities. If you're lucky, you might get to witness northern alliance 2.0, but I doubt it
 
To put it simply:

Even IF the United States got everything right by building infrastructure and a relationship with the natives population, would that mean the majority of them would really like to live under a secular society too foreign for their eyes?

Some people would rather stick to their own antiquated traditions and culture, even if they hate it. Like smoking!

When I mentioned to my pops that Ahmed Massoud is leading the last pocket of resistance, he reminesced how he saw him on the news after his father was killed. He was 11 or so in the newsreel, standing next to his father and dressed exactly like him. This guy studied in London and now is fueled by fucking revenge. Hope he can avenge his papa.

Your change of heart is unsurprising. Now that the Talibans have taken over Kiwi Farms, replacing Mundane Matt with Mundane Mohammed (pbuh), we are all Talibans now. In the words of another famous Muslim, we are on the “right side of history.”
 
Yeah, your intuitions are probably right.
  • Its complex, the fundamentalists are wrong to try to make you do anything but they are more the enemy of your enemy than a danger to you.
  • The Christian side of you doesn't like their Islamic extremism but America's atheistic nightmare is far more of a threat.
  • The Taliban forces fought American forces, but they fought them in Afghanistan not Los Angeles. We fought them in their house, and we got pushed out.
  • They might treat women harshly, but I wonder if their women have as high a rate of mental illness, depression, or pill-popping. We just might be the worse culture to be female in, for complex reasons but statistically it could be true
  • The Taliban might be brutal, but it might be in a Wild West US Marshal way considering the lack of technology and education there. Society sometimes needs a blunt order-keeping, could you order Afghanistan? We tried!
  • America is The Great Satan, once you see that it Ruby Ridges Americans too, you can't go back to a simple patriotism. There will be no punishment for Ruby Ridge or Afghanistan for the same reasons.
  • The Taliban are trying to do the right thing, they are simple illiterate folks sometimes and they make simple illiterate mistakes. Its not good, but I'm not Afghanistan. God alone will do with Afghanistan what He wills, not I.

I'm not exactly sure where this idea that conservatives have a black-and-white worldview come from. The plethora of political ideologies, philosophies and policies comes from conservatism, or people who were raised or the product of conservative cultures.
Liberalism is only useful in small indents.

This right here applies to huge swaths of the Middle East, Africa, and South America. You can't give civilization to people who don't want it or aren't mentally developed enough to even handle it. Our biggest mistake was meddling in their lives and not letting them live how they wanted to within reason.

the meme that 'big city states and expansive empires = civilization' is an even worse meme, but of course urbies don't like to think about nuances like 'does society function' or 'is there a strong sense of community' and would much rather pretend that what makes a place civilised are internet access and going to the local cafe every morning instead of how the population behaves.

Understand the /pol/ view of this: that the Taliban is fighting against the forces of globalism and Western decadence and that their win over the US shows how “based” they are. Whether they give a way of life worth living is another matter.
 
If you're sad Shrub II didn't get to implement a Christian theocracy in Afghanistan don't be. Thats not what they were doing at all. I remember a story about how there was a minor situation where they blew a ton of money from American taxpayers to literally prance around in a field with a banner extolling feminism or something similar. And thats just an example of the tiny sliver that actually made it to where it was supposed to go rather than straight into some corrupt officials pocket.
